Qualitative Admission Factors such as ECs, Honors

I plan to matriculate to a four-year university in Fall '10 or Spring '11 from a local community college in Dallas, Texas.

My past academic performance from 2003-2005 was very inconsistent, but I’ve started improved substantially with acquiring a 4.0 last semester.

I would like a transfer to Southern Methodist University to complete my undergraduate studies in computer science. My transferable GPA will be in the neighborhood of 3.4-3.6, but I would like to complement my low GPA with qualitative factors such as EC involvement, academic accomplishments, a compelling essay, and letters of recommendation from very credible sources.

My concerns are related to just how much will participating in ECs for the next three (regular) semesters will help me (as in convincing adcoms that I’m a good fit for the school)? Or should I push my matriculation to Spring '11?

Also, will taking (and successfully completing) credit hours of 18-20 for the following semesters be a boost for my application(s) as will show adcoms that I’m able to take a typical university student load versus the average, easier community college student load of only 12-13 hours? I was an 18 credit hour student this semester, but I had to withdraw from a four-hour accounting II course due to me feeling there were too many “holes” in my competency to make an “A” in the class. How much did this withdrawal hurt me seeing that it’s not very relevant for my major?

Thanks for your comments.
