Quality of Math and History Depts at UVA?

Thanks for the info hazelorb. For the record, if I decide I don’t want to do EE I am definitely going to double major in math and physics. I’m kind of afraid I won’t be able to use all the cool math I learn as an engineer when I get out into the real world. My transferring my calc 3 and linear algebra might be difficult as I don;t have dual enrollment or AP for them. My school offers dual enrollment for those classes but this is the only time I have ever been there and I wasn’t quite sure how it worked so I missed the DE deadline… yikes. I don’t know how thats gonna work

If you do EE, you can probably easily minor in math, especially if you’re ahead in the math sequence. UVA’s EE curriculum requires atleast one 3-cr math elective, maybe even two, i dont remember off the top of my head. With other free electives open, a minor can be easilbly obtained.

Woops. Diff is required. I want to take 312 since a statistics course is required for comm (I wanna major in accounting as well) and math electives are needed anyway.

Yeah, I realize that shoebox.

I wonder if I could pull a triple major in EE, math, and physics… hmm… lol

UVA doesn’t grant triple majors. It wouldn’t be worth it, anyway…it’s not like your education is confined to the classroom. Get out, have some beers, see a basketball game, whatever. Employers and professional schools value balanced, well-rounded people, for the most part.

I know, it was more a joke than anything else

I’d be cautious in accepting other peoples’ evaluations of departments and classes (most impressions here seem well grounded). A negative impression may simply have to do with the material instead of the department’s faculty. I’m certain the bulk of the disdain of the math department comes from Calc students who never intended to go much further than high school math but then run into calculus to meet their math/science requirement. That said, if you take the Calc sequence you may likely end up with professors and/or TA’s who can’t speak english which doesn’t make the matter easier.

I enjoy math regardless. I want to sleep in diff. eq. and the professor often gets lost in his own examples. Sometimes math just needs to be lectured. But I still enjoy the work and the concepts. If you’re that kind of person then you can just deal with the Math department; it’s not like you won’t learn.
