Wondering what everyone does to spend some quality time with their students before they head back to school? My D worked two jobs all summer and spread her time between home with me and being with her Dad/Stepmother, her grown sisters and nieces/nephews and my Mom and Dad.
She’s heading back to school on Sunday morning and we’re hanging out between jobs as much as we can the next few days. She surprised me last night and said she got out of work early and wanted to come by for dinner and a movie before going to sleep at her grandparents. We watched Beauty and the Beast ! I’ve been waiting to watch this with her since it came out, it was really good
Tonight we are going to a late showing of Rocky Horror Picture and going to dinner tomorrow night at one of her favorite restaurants. She’ll then head to her Dads, spend Saturday night with him and hit the road Sunday. She’s hoping she can fit all her new apartment items in her car for the ride back. Her excitement is growing and I’m so happy for her.
Sounds wonderful @NEPatsGirl. We had about 12 days with our daughter before we had to fly back to Asia and her research internship ended. We spent it shopping for the few items she needed (minimal clothing mostly), hanging out in our small boat and summer home in Maine, cooking and eating (yeah a few lobsters, some native corn, and blueberry pie) and just enjoying the precious time together. She did have to have an early move in, and though a junior did have a temporary bought of homesickness triggered once we got back to Asia from which she quickly recovered.
We took her to school, unloaded her storage unit, moved her in, helped her unpack about half of her stuff, took her out to lunch and grocery shopping and started on our return trip.
As long as you’re spending time together that’s what counts…but I’d put going for a long walk/hike at a local park on my list - and a leisurely stop for delicious ice cream afterwards - the kind where you sit on a bench or picnic table to eat and savor the time - not eating it while driving!
I work full time. I arranged to take half-days of vacation throughout the time when one or both daughters were visiting in August. Here are some things we did: watched “Jeopardy” and other TV shows; watched a few movies on DVD; went to the zoo; watched the partial eclipse from a dog park; went to my sister’s house in another city for my mom’s birthday (89!); went to my mom’s house in another city, with supper from the traditional pizza restaurant and a stop at the traditional soft-serve stand on the way home. I gave my ex-husband the 411 so he knew our daughters would be here, and much to my surprise, he actually arranged substitute care for his very disabled parents and spent a few days here.
Only had her home for 2-3 weeks. We did some local hikes, peach picking and such, then two nice road trips to visit family, hike, swim, etc. Good times.
I’m partial to nice meals (mostly dinners) at restaurants we like, getting together with relatives (they LOVE their cousins and love playing board games with them), massages we give one another for D, and just late night chats (we sometimes need to nap so we can stay awake for those chats).
