quarter to semester - how should i handle course overlap?

i will be attending a California CC (Orange Coast College) in the fall and am concerned because the school i am in right now has quarter-length terms and as such i’ve notice significant course overlap.

i am wanting to continue my calculus sequence. i will be finishing a course equivalent to Orange Coast College’s Calculus II this term at my current school. the two courses differ only by the topic of sequence and series and a further look at D.E.s. other than that the curriculum is similar. i’d really hate to have to take this class again just to get a very small portion of this course.

my questions are these:

 • could i expect to receive credit for this course upon transferring? these courses are both cataloged as “Calculus II”

would it be feasible, if i received credit for “Calculus II”, to audit this class for the fall term so that I can still be exposed to the missed topics without feeling like i’m taking the class over again? this would also give me the ability to proceed to take “Calculus III” (multivariable calculus) at the same time. possible?

any input is greatly appreciated.
thanks!

In the quarter system, a year-long Calc sequence would be Calc I/II/III, while the same semester sequence would be Calc I/II. Multivariate Calculus is usually Calc IV at quarter schools, and Calc III at semester schools. In order to be well-prepared for multivariate calculus, you should be familiar with infinite numerical series, power series, conic sections, polar coordinates, parametric equations and vectors. If you covered all those topics, you should be good to go. If not, you might want to proceed with your plan to audit Calc II, or at least sit in on the second half of the semester.

P.S. I am the Math & Science Division Dean at a quarter-system community college
