queen sized comforter, too big?

are queen sized comforters too big for dorms?

I just had to answer this post. As a mom with 2 college students, the answer is absolutely “Yes”. Even a full-sized comforter would be huge on an extra-long twin-sized bed. I would recommend using a twin-sized comforter, and it’ll fit quite nicely. Anything bigger will probably just be dragging on the floor and get dirty easily. I’ve found that even the regular twin-sized comforters are plenty big, and even those can tend to overlap on the floor.

OTOH, my D had a queen sized set she loved, she took it to the dorm and simply allowed it to hang down on her lofted bed and cover up what was underneath, thereby allowing her to use her nifty set  This may only work if you can loft the bed at your school, but she has used it subsequently in other rooms, not lofted, with no problems.

Maybe it depends how much you like your quilt? ;)

We always buy comforters and blankets one size bigger than the bed, since that provides more of an overhang on the sides. Both kids took double/full-sized comforters to school, and used the overhang to help hide all the stuff they stashed under their beds. However, I think a queen sized comforter would probably be too big for a twin-sized bed.

I would go with a Full size comforter; easier to keep on, easier to make bed, (yeah right!!) and gives you better coverage at night.

Too big and TOO HOT!

i have a full/queen (i’m not sure which) size blanket on my twin bed at home, and i love it so much more than my twin sized blanket. i wish i would of taken it to my apartment at school, but for some reason i didnt.

My son never unpacked his comforter in Boston. It’s too hot in his room to need it and he never makes the bed anyway (it’s on a platform about 4 feet high and hard to make he tells me). Unless you want it for decorating purposes then you might see if the dorms are hot.

A queen would be the right length for an extra-long bed. Might be too wide, though - a full-sized comforter seems to work well.

Full-sized comforter is what my daughter uses. Since she elevated her bed with risers (from Bed, Bath, and Beyond), the full-sized fits perfectly and covers all her storage items kept under the bed.

My daughter’s favorite cover, for her twin-sized beds both at home and at school, is a full/queen quilt (which is slightly puffy but not as huge as a down comforter). I guess it works because she never makes her bed ;).
