Question about 1098

Since my son is only a freshman in college, I have never had to deal with a 1098 before so I have a few questions. My son attends the University of Florida. For 2011-2012 school year - he took $5500 in student loans, he received $2828 in Bright Futures Scholarship, $700 UF grant and I took a parent plus loan of $2000. All of that has covered his tuition and housing. I give him money each month to go towards food and I paid for his books and all supplies and other expenses.

I was trying to finish my taxes on Turbotax but I don’t know if I have to wait for the 1098 to complete them and what, if anything, I will be able to include as educational expenses.

Anyone know?

How much did you pay towards the college for tuition & related fees? (not rm & bd).
That is amount that will go on 1098-

Tuition and fees is approximately 6k for fall and spring semester. So even though it was paid through student loans and Bright Futures scholarships, I can put it on my taxes as education expense? I guess that’s what I am not getting.

If you haven’t paid for tuition, you can’t put it as an expense.
