Question about 15

It says that if you want to add 15 as a second major, you have to take two semesters in another department and you have to petition the CoC.

I was wondering what they meant exactly when they said “two semesters in another dept.”

Also, how hard is it to add 15 on as a second major? 4.00 GPA, anything else?

Thanks in advance.

This just means you can’t petition for a double major until the first semester of your junior year at the earliest, since you can declare a major starting at the end of freshman year. Your sophomore year would be the two semesters in your primary department.

It’s not difficult to add any major as a double – there are no regulations other than the B average and a clear plan to complete the two majors in your remaining time at MIT – but for 15 in particular, you might consider declaring 15 as your primary major in order to get priority your sophomore year in the Sloan bidding system. You can still take the courses you want to take in the other department, because very few classes in other departments give priority to majors the way Sloan does.

As an example, my friend wanted to double in 6 and 15. She declared 15 as her major at the end of freshman year so she’d have priority in the lottery, but continued taking all the course 6 classes she would have taken sophomore year anyway. Junior year, she declared 6 as her second major.
