Question about acceptance for an MS or PhD in Computer Science

Hey guys and gals,

I’m new to this website and I’ve been looking through the search function, but haven’t been able to find what I’m looking for.
I have a main question:
I had a different major that I disliked very much prior to working on my BS in Computer Science. I didn’t do well in the major and my GPA suffered. I’ve managed to get it up to a 2.7 with the newer classes I’ve taken. My question is if I apply to a program, will they cut me off from potential admissions because my cGPA is low even though the classes I have poor grades on have NOTHING to do with Computer Science? Or do they typically (hopefully) look at the major GPA?

Thank you guys very much and I really appreciate it!

They will look at the major GPA but the key is getting past the first cut when GRE scores and overall GPA may knock you out. In general, smaller programs will scrutinize each application carefully while the big programs with lots of applicants can’t afford to do that and might simply start with a cutoff point for GRE and GPA.
