Question about Affirmative Action

How is Affirmative Action practiced in college admissions?
What is the difference in the way a minority student’s application is reviewed compared to a non-minority student’s application.
I’m not asking for your opinions about whether or not Affirmative Action should be used or for rumors. I want facts, because they’re difficult to find online.

Have you looked on the AA or Hispanic Students forums for information? Or read the opening posts on the Race FAQ sticky thread at the top of this forum? Those are all existing resources for your question.

Depends on the college.

Duke, in the 90s, had, along with its various regional admissions counselors, an African American counselor who, along with regional counselor readings, read African American applications with a more lenient eye for special circumstances.

So they got a less difficult second read.

But was just at Duke. In the 90s.

This is a very broad question and depends, among other things, on the college, the state (no AA in Texas, FL, or CA), and the socio-economic status. Two academics who have done lots of research into AA in college admissions are Thomas Espenshade at Princeton and Richard Kahlenberg at Cornell. If you google there names, a cornucopia of AA information will come up. Here is an article by Espenshade to get you started.

For whether ethnicity affects freshman admissions at a given college, look at the college’s Common Data Set (section C7) or the admissions tab on its entry on [CollegeData: College Search, Financial Aid, College Application, College Scholarship, Student Loan, FAFSA Info, Common Application](http://www.collegedata.com) .

Generalizations are likely inaccurate for a large percentage of colleges you may apply to. The largest generalizations possible involve state universities in states where there is a statewide policy (e.g. no consideration of ethnicity in state universities in California and Florida). But other state universities and private universities can be all over the place. And when it is considered, how it is considered differs at each college.
