I’m doing an online application now and it asks me for my alien registration number (permanent residency number). On my green card it says A# xxx-xxx-xxx (all x’s are 0-9 digits). But when I type this into the online application it rejects it, saying a valid number has 9 characters, but the first is a letter and the eight following characters are 0-9 digits. Mine does not have a letter (the A# is not part of it). All 9 characters are numbers. What am I supposed to do?

Call the admissions office. Also, its a longshot, but make sure it is not just rejecting it because you typed (or did not type) in hyphens. Probably not the issue, but unspecified formatting is a significant issue in many online forms (and sometimes they give error messages unrelated to the actual issue).

You’ve been caught with a fake AR number. I’d get out of the country ASAP if I were you.

I called the admissions office and they’re on holiday until September 5. I guess I’ll just have to wait.

Regarding formatting, only 10 spaces are available to type the number in and using 2 hypens would require 11 spaces. Interestingly, if you use all 10 spaces, you get the same error message saying there are only 9 characters in a valid number. I hope the person that made this online app dies a horrible death.

Just for reference, what happens if you type a random letter in (that is, assuming you are actually legal)? Does it accept it (don’t actually submit the app without contacting admissions first)?

p.s. They’re not going to track you down from entering an invalid number into a college app that you have not submitted - (sorry, Smytty)

YOU are applying already for next FALL(2007) ? what school are u applying to?

It only checks to see if the format is that of a valid number and not if the number itself is valid. If I replace the first number with any letter (eg. Qxxxxxxxx), it gets accepted.

A little google research showed me that older permanent residency numbers had 8 digits instead of 9. Perhaps that has something to do with this?

And yes, I’m applying for fall 2007. This university that I’m talking about is Purdue West Lafayette.

You’ll have to talk to admissions
