Question about APs at the end of the year

Hey there,

I was among the lucky to have been admitted to Berkeley for 2016. Now, when reading the “conditional requirements” page, I have the feeling that any AP classes you’re taking this year HAVE to have an AP exam be taken, too. I take 6 APs and it’s kind of expensive to do them all, so I was only planning on doing 2 or 3 of them…

Does anyone have any idea about this?

Thanks!

No, I don’t believe taking the AP exam is EVER required for anything. You only take the AP Exam when you want college credit for exempt from introductory courses or if you want to showcase the skills and knowledge you’ve attained from an AP Course.

Either way, you will send all your AP scores when you take the AP exam in May. If you didn’t sign up for an AP test, it won’t be sent.

No need to take the AP exams.

AP courses are more difficult, thus the more you took the more rigorous they considered your coursework. That is still true whether you take a single AP test or not.

As far as AP tests, if it is not a hardship to take them, they will at a minimum give yoiu a running start towards the 120 units needed for graduation and will move you ahead of those without units - you could be considered a sophomore or higher based on the units, giving you hopefully better registration times.

Check your intended major to see which AP tests will actually be useful for subject credit.

Also, otherwise worthless generic credits from AP tests can improve your class standing (but not class level), which may give you some registration priority.
