how hard is it to get into Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts for graphic design? (possibly double major in creative writing)
do they look more into the portfolio than the gpa? or is it the other way around-

here are my stats:
gpa: 3.6 weighted (took mixture of honors + ap classes)
act:28
extra curric: 3 yrs golf,2 yrs after-school orchestra, 50hrs volunteering, after-school art school (30hrs per week) from beginning of junior->senior year, had my pieces in LISA art show exhibition, 2 school exhibitions, and a H-mart exhibition
recs: possibly great rec from my ap. studio art teacher who has known me for few years

Academics/extra-curriculars must be up to Wash U. standards to be admitted in the School of Art. Washingotn University gives each student the opportunity to transfer from one school into another (unlike Penn where you must apply to Wharton undergrad if you wish to major in business.)

Because fewer students meet Wash U’s academic standards and wish to major in Art (far more want to be doctors, go into business, etc…) a greater percentage of applicants get into the school - but all of those applicants meet a minimum academic standard.

Your stats seem low, and Wash U. may be a reach for you. I think it is particularly worrisome that you’re uncertain if you’d get a great rec. from your studio art teacher…

FYI, my daughter and I went to visit Carnegie-Mellon’s art school and we were told that their decisions were made based on half the high school record and half on art talent.

You should take your portfolio to one of the National Portfolio Days held across the nation and talk to some schools. You’ll only have time to talk to five or six schools because the lines are rather long, but you can/should get feedback on your art to date, and you can mention your stats and ask chances of admission.
