On the caltech website it says,
Degrees awarded in 2006
BS 247 (of whom 143 graduated with honor)
MS 120
Engineer 0
PhD 177

Why is engineering zero?

Oh wait does BS includes all the engineering majors?

That’s correct, I think engineer is a level of degree between MS and PhD, but it’s not a very common one and you don’t see it. Undergrad engineers earn BS’s in their respective fields (ChemE, MechE, etc)

jdhutchin is correct about Engineer Degree. It is an advance degree between MS and Ph.D. It is suppose to be a degree more toward advanced applications, however one of its recipient is B.B. Mandelbrot, “the father of fractals”.

The engineer’s degree is between MS and Ph.D. in terms of academic level or ranking, but like Ph.D., it’s a post-MS terminal degree. Once you get it, you’re done and you can’t go further. Personally, I don’t know why it’s so unpopular. My theory is that the grad students who are crazy enough to come here in the first place are probably crazy enough to attempt a Ph.D. But the engineer’s degree probably gets you almost as far as a Ph.D. (if you’re not planning to go into academia), though with a lot less pain.
