Question about enrolling somewhere but never taking classes, and applications

Hi everyone,

So here’s my deal. I’m 21, I graduated from high school in 2011 here in the US, however due to lack of financial funds I haven’t been able to go to college. I only have 6 years living in the US, and back when I was in high school, I was very oblivious of the process and importance of applying to college and doing necessary research. Especially for someone in my situation. (I’m a DREAMer guy). There was no financial aid for me and options were very limited, so I didn’t anywhere except a local community college.

I’m very well informed now, and I found out about, need blind admissions and need based aid provided by several private universities. (Most of them Ivy leagues of course) I did pretty well in school, got a good amount of extra curriculars, awards, math club competitions, AP’s and grades. So I’m planning on giving this whole college thing a real try. I love school, and learning and I’m passionate about computer science and math and this is the best chance I’ve got.

My SAT’s were not so great so I’m planning on retaking them this November, along with a couple subject tests, and what not.

However, here’s my big question, when I applied to community college and tried to study, I was admitted, though I don’t think they’d deny anyone, and I registered for a class(all I thought I could afford), but I was dropped before it began as I didn’t pay for it. I never took any classes there or got involved whatsoever, but would the fact that I enrolled(again I never took any classes) disqualify to apply as a first year incoming freshman now that I’m trying to apply again? Could I be able to just withdraw from the community college since I never partook in any academic activity there? Or did I screw myself up?

You need to ask at that CC about your status with them. Did you withdraw before classes started, or did they drop you after classes had started because you didn’t pay? Sometimes this can make a difference.

While you are there, have a conversation with the Transfer Counselor about your long-term goals. Some of them are very good about getting money for their best students when those students transfer.

Wishing you all the best!

The class was gonna start 08/29/2011, however I was dropped from it 08/09/11 for not paying, so before class started. Again, I didn’t take any classes there, so they wouldn’t really have any background on how good I am besides my high school stuff. The other problem is that I don’t live in that city anymore. I’m about 8 hours away from that CC.

I could be wrong and you could research this to verify but I remember reading a couple times that if you have under a certain number of credits you are considered an incoming freshman as opposed to a transfer student.

Sorry I don’t know the exact info but it doesn’t apply to me so I didn’t bother to try to remember the exact numbers.

Well there you have it. The CC dropped you from the roster due to non-payment. You can’t “claim” any credit for having taken it (b/c you didn’t) nor can it be said that you actually enrolled (b/c you didn’t). I wouldn’t sweat it another second.

Send them an email then.

But since your were dropped before classes began, your status is the same as someone who cancelled enrollment before classes began. It looks to me like you are good to go.

Alright, I’ll send them an email asking them for my status there, and I’ll also email the schools I intend to apply just to make sure, but by what has been said, it looks like I might be fine.
Thanks!
