Question about essay prompts

I thought I could probably get a good answer in this forum.

Many essay prompts ask the writer to “describe or evaluate an experience that impacted him or her.”

I think this refers to an experience covering the time period of a day or two. However, could it be answered with an “experience” over several years - ex: someone’s development as a musician or athlete.

The best essays I’ve read cover a time span of a few years, giving a good sense of the writer’s depth and personality.

so what is your question?

This should be in the essay forum.

Generally, the most effective essays are anecdotes or a series of anecdotes wound around a central theme. Anecdotes force students to be specific, visceral and to avoid vague generalizations like “I learned how to be part of a team from volleyball.”

Could there be an effective essay spanning years? Yes, absolutely. But it’s much trickier to draw the reader in when you’re not telling a story, and it may mean you sacrifice depth for breadth.

^^Ah okay, sorry for posting it in the wrong forum.

This is question.

Many essay prompts ask the writer to “describe or evaluate an experience that impacted him or her.”

-Does something that happened over several years qualify as an experience? In example essay books, the responses to this question almost always focus on an event covering a day or two.

Thanks for the advice glassesarechic :)
