Question about Extracurriculars

Do colleges prefer students who join school sports teams?

I am currently participating in many extra-curricular activities at my school (such as MUN, Tae Kwon Do, Baroque Ensemble, Interact, NHS, etc.) But I didn’t join any sports teams… is that a bad thing?

Also, how useful are winning awards in academic competitions (such as the World Scholar’s Cup) for application resumes?

Let’s face it: everyone isn’t a three-season athlete. Some may only be a one-sport athlete, like me. Others might hate any form of physical activity out there. Colleges know this. But they might pay attention to your athletics if they feel that their school could use a great [insert sport here] player. It’s certainly helpful if you played a sport, because this shows dedication, time management, and potentially even leadership, but it won’t hurt against you if you don’t join a team.

World Scholar’s Cup sounds very impressive! What is the context? You can certainly list that under “Honors.”

Don’t worry about not playing a sport. Colleges don’t expect every person they accept to be athletic.

This is what the World Scholar’s Cup is about.

There’s an annual regional competition in Taiwan. Basically students just read a bunch of information on the different topics of each year. Then they compete, in debates, essay writing, and the scholar’s bowl and scholar’s challenge (answering a bunch of questions from the reading). People can win medals for each individual subject as well as team medals and trophies.

Are you an international student from Taiwan? (I’m Taiwanese too haha!)

Yeah, I am. :)

i am an international student from taiwan too! any recommended extracurricular activities? conventions are rarely held in taiwan and as far as i know there’s only MUN and World Scholars Cup and I did both. HELP? please and thank you!
