Hi, I’m planning to do a joint major in EECS and Materials science…and the booklet’s recommending me to take E 10 (Engineering Design and Analysis) and E 7 (Intro to Applied Computing) freshman year. Are these absolute requirements? What if I just don’t take these and go straight to CS 61A? Thanks.

E7 and CS61A count for the same thing.
If you are able to, take E7 instead because MATLAB is more useful than scheme (esp if you are doing a materials science double major).

Does that mean that CS 61A is not necessary to get a joint EECS/MatSci degree?

CoE’s sample EECS/MSE Joint Major Course Program is on this very long webpage about a quarter to a third down:

[Undergraduate Notes 2007 - 2008](http://www.eecs.berkeley.edu/Programs/Notes/newnotes.shtml#chapter2)

It states that you must take CS61A and doesn’t say to take E7

It says to take Engineering 7 (E7) during Freshman Spring, under “Sample Curriculum for EECS/MSE Joint Major”

Then you gotta do both CS61A and E7 for the joint degree.
