Question about Full Ride to University of Alaska-Fairbanks

???

If you don’t have money for Room and Board, then how would you have money for a WUE school? You’d be paying for tuition, room, board and the rest of the costs.

How much CAN you pay? If the number is very low, then you need to go to a Calif public as a transfer.

WUE works best for those who can pay. Scholarships aren’t usually available for WUE students AND since you’re still OOS, much aid isn’t likely.

ucbalumnus’s post has a list of WUE-eligible majors.

No California public school offers my major, “mom2collegekids”. Its petroleum engineering; between UAF and other colleges that offer petro-engineering UAF is by far the cheapest in overall cost and it is on the front lines of oil production. In any event I will take out loans because the starting salary is high enough where I won’t have to worry about being in debt for long.

[Financial Aid Office | Tuition and fees](Tuition & fees | Financial Aid Office | Financial Aid)
You should be eligible for WUE tuition at UAF, but that still leaves ~$15k in annual expenses. You cannot borrow that much alone. Will your parents cosign loans?

The oil industry is up and down, so don’t get overconfident. Mechanical and chemical engineering are also very relevant majors.

No, I will not have any financial assistance from parents. I know it screws me over even more because I am middle class. Where does this leave me??

PetE isn’t a necessary major to work in the oil industry. A ChemE degree would work just as well…so would MechE.

In any event I will take out loans because the starting salary is high enough where I won’t have to worry about being in debt for long.

YOU can’t borrow much. YOU can only borrow $5500 for frosh year, 6500 as a soph, 7500 jr, 7500 sr.

To borrow more, you’d need willing a qualified cosigners to cosign EVERY year (and requalify each year). Will your parents do that? if not, then you won’t get the loans.

Since you’re not likely going to get the funding to go OOS, which major, ChemE or MechE might interest you?

I can’t imagine that going to UCLA with 31k annual cost will be much cheaper (even with financial aid) than going to UAF with about a 17k annual cost. I will not have cosigners even if I go to an in-state school. Does this mean I should abandon the thought of going to college? Remember that I originally posted about getting the UAF Nanook Scholarship which covers FULL Tuition, bringing that 17k to under 10k plus the other scholarships that I qualify for.

It certainly doesn’t hurt to apply and see what happens, but you need a backup plan. Perhaps try to work and take classes part time?

Have you called to ask about OOS transfer scholarships yet?

I have to be out of my house by summer 2014 so I’m taking as many courses as I can while earning just enough money to pay for food, gas, and insurance on my car. I am still waiting for the university to reply since I believe they are on break right now. Do you think that WUE students count as in state transfers or is it something seperate from both instate and OOS transfers?

???
Where are you getting that UAF has an OOS cost of $17k? The OOS cost is over $31k.

Tuition and fees… $18,962
Room and board… $7,450
Books and supplies $1,400
Estimated personal expenses $2,250
Transportation expenses $2,000
Estimated Total… $31,462

Do your parents earn under $80k per year? If so, then you’d qualify for Blue and Gold at UCs. Also likely get other aid.

You can’t count on getting full tuition from UAF since you don’t yet have test scores, and it’s not certain if OOS students get that much.

For WUE, you’d be an OOS transfer.

Since you don’t have cosigners, you’re going to have to strategize to get the best deal. Do you have relatives that you can live with while commuting to a univ?

What would New Mexico schools give you? Look at both UNM and that public tech school in NM.

I know several successful engineers who worked for a while and saved money before getting their degrees. Might be something to consider, especially if you gain residency somewhere with affordable in-state schools.

It sounds like you are living on your own. I don’t know much about emancipation, but you might be able to get more financial aid in-state as an independent student. Perhaps someone else can talk about that?

Go ahead and mention that you are WUE, but since you need substantially more than that I don’t think it is a big deal.

So, you got an answering machine or recording when you called?

EDIT: m2ck, OP can pay WUE costs as a transfer. It works out to around $17k. Still too high.

OP can pay WUE costs as a transfer. It works out to around $17k

Do you mean at UAF? WUE is 150% tuition. That would put costs about about $20k. $17k would be for instate.

OP…what about health insurance? Will your parents cover you or will you need that? What about cell phones, car insurance, etc?

^ See link in post #24. Not accounting for travel, books, insurance, etc.

This is purely academic anyway unless additional aid is in the picture.

Am I reading this wrong?!?!?
[Financial Aid Office | Tuition and fees](Tuition & fees | Financial Aid Office | Financial Aid)
I live in California. Therefore, I will qualify for WUE. This is Approximately $17k annually! Only $3k more than In-state students are paying! Additionally, PetE students qualify for loads of grants/scholarships offered by the petroleum companies.

I am not going to be on vacation you guys! I will be living on campus, I will not be traveling, I will only buy what I need to survive. I just got off the phone with the financial aid department and said lacking cosigners is not a problem. I will just have to take out loans to cover everything else.

Who is going to offer you loans without a cosigner? Did they give you a name?

Why is everyone encouraging me to put a financial burden on someone other than myself for school? It is me going to school not my relatives. I will not put a financial burden on them. There has to be a way I can go to college without having someone cosign a loan. Is Federal Work Study a viable option?

No one is encouraging you to burden your family. We are being realistic about the willingness of lenders to loan money to a young student with few assets and little to no credit history.

Will your parents/guardians help you fill out a FAFSA form?

Yes I think thats the most that they will do regarding financial aid. So pretty much everyone in college has gotten their parents to cosign loans? I

How are you paying for community college now? Sorry if I missed this.

Do you qualify for need-based aid in CA? I’m not an expert on that, but if your family is low-income there might be some financing options available.
