Question about HS foreign language requirement

My son is a sophomore in high school and is finalizing his schedule for next year. The West Point web site lists “two years of foreign language” under “Academic Preparation” (http://admissions.usma.edu/startyoung.cfm). This HS is on a semester system. His current academic plan calls for him to take German 101 second semester of his junior year and German 102 fist semester of his senior year.

Will this satisfy the language requirement? For him to have two full years (four semesters) of language, he would have to schedule a language course each semester his junior and senior year which would mean loosing two other academic courses.

we had a few questions about foreign languages and called admissions before junior year— we were told foreign languages are RECOMMENDED or encouraged- not required…

Most college prep schools or high school programs for college bound kids require 2 years plus (3 years of one or 2 of one language / 2 of another)
That’s what my son did- 2 years of spanish and 2 years of American sign language.

I have never taken a foreign language class in high school and I will be attending West point in the Class of 2011. I guess it wasn’t that big of an issue.

Usually “2 years” means 2 credits.

The state of Florida doesn’t require any credits in a foreign language, but most universities/colleges in FL require 2 credits in the same language. My d’s high school is on a block schedule, so 1 semester for her is 1 credit, but not all schools in our area are on the block schedule.

Check with your son’s guidance counselor for clarification. He/she will know the requirements.
