Question about LaGuardia Airport and flights

My S is currently in South America and will be flying home in August. The cheapest flight I found was a United flight from Chile to LaGuardia and from there, I’d like to book a direct flight to Boston on American. He will have to claim his bag from his United flight and then check in at American Airlines and go through security. How much time between flights do people suggest to allow for him to get from United arrivals and onto an American flight? I know that there can be delays and all of the best planning may be for naught, but he does have travel insurance. Thanks!

I want to add that he has a stop in Houston prior to arriving in NY, so he will not have to go through Customs in NY.

LAG is a total nightmare right now, with construction.

The good news is that both United and American are in Terminal B, so that should make it a bit more manageable.

The construction will only impact him if he has to leave the airport, which he won’t.

I use LaGuardia for business trips many times a year. My least favorite airport by far. But he should be fine as both United and American are on Terminal B. Considering potential delays, I would allow at least 90 minutes between flights but he will still be fine even if it is a 45 minute layover.

45 minutes with having to recheck luggage and go through security again is too tight. However, LGA to BOS is a popular route, so there should be no issue reaccommodating even if he does misconnect.

Are there any flights from Houston to Boston direct?

He will have to claim his luggage in LGA and recheck it at the American counter and go through security again. Make sure his bag is less than 50 lbs for the domestic flight from LGA to BOS or he will be charged excess baggage fees. American is very tough on this. Flights, especially United from Houston during the afternoons during the summer are invariably delayed due to weather. I would allow the minimum of 2 hours.

can he do Houston to boston?
have you checked chile …Miami than on to boston?

Thanks so much for the responses. I was going to say that I had looked into Chile to Houston and then to Boston and the cost was crazy, but that was for the United flight that continued onto LGA-much more expensive to only fly one leg of the flight! But American has less expensive flights to Houston and with a flight to Boston, very reasonable. I’ll have to look into Miami. I really appreciate everyone’s help. Now I know the way to search for flights and will expand my search. It’s crazy that the cheapest I can get him from Chile to Boston booking that way on American is $928, but if I book Chile to Houston and then Houston to Boston, I can do it on the same airline for $526(plus cost of one bag from Houston to Boston).

Wow! That’s a steal! I would expect HOU to BOS to be $300 or more.

@Sportsman88, depends on the day of the week. Flights to Boston start at $107 on a Tuesday in August.

Hijack here, what terminal is Southwest in at LaGuardia? We’ll be flying in on 8/26.

And another hijack…How bad is the construction if we fly into terminal B, pick up a rental car, and leave the airport?

@MJMAMA that’s right, this is one way. and day of the week matters.

Break, break: @jcstepmom @toledo hijacking a thread is always bad but isn’t it doubly bad hijacking a thread about flying?

The construction is horrible. It took my sister in law 2 hours just to get out of the airport.

@jcstepmom Southwest is in the main terminal at LGA (Terminal B).
@toledo The biggest issue is getting from baggage claim to the rental car lots. Depending on your rental car company, its very hard to walk there from any of the terminals (except the Marine Air Terminal). You have to take a shuttle bus which depending on the traffic can take a while. Since the most of rental car lots are at the far western end of the airport where the construction isn’t really going on, once you’re there, it should be pretty easy to be on your way.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Hijacking a thread is rude to the original poster. Since the hijacker’s questions have been answered (Southwest is in B and LaGuardia construction sucks), any followup questions from the hijackers should be handled in a new thread, and any further responses to them will be deleted from this one.
