question about legacy

hey ssup, i’m a rising senior and i have a question…

i have a list of colleges that i want to go to… including

u penn and nyu-stern…

… but i picked U Mich as my safety…

… because my mom got a bachelor’s degree there

my dad got a masters and a ph.d there

and my bro just graduated there last may…

… so assuming that i’ve got a just-a-bit-above-average-resume…

… would it be wise to set UMich as my safety??

No, it would not be wise to do that.
For a safety, you need to be in at least the top 20-25%.
You can’t count on being boosted in to U Mich by being a legacy.

northstarmom is absolutely correct. However, UMich is rolling admissions. If you apply early, you will usually hear early. Then you’ll know for certain, one way or the oher.

I agree, legacy by itself does not make a school a “safety” for you --it just increases your odds if you are already similar to their average stats.

when you say 20-25%, what do you mean??

Go to Item C First Time First Year Freshmen: Find Section C9 Freshman Profile
There you will see listed the stats for the Freshman Class that entered in Fall of 2004.
The chart shows the ranges of the SAT and ACT scores for the Students that entered
For SATs the 75th percentile (Top 25%) scored over 680 Verbal and 720 Math

They also have a chart of the percent of first time freshmen with scores in each range.
SAT’S - Verbal - Math
700-800 20% – 40%
600-699 49% – 44%
500-599 26% – 13%
400-499- 4% – 2%
300-399- 1% – 1%
200-299- 0% – 0%

Item C-10 notes that 90% of freshmen were in the top 10% of their high School Class and 98% were in the top 25% of their High School Class.
Item C-11 lists that 98% of Freshmen had a HS GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Item C-12 that the average HS GPA was 3.72

While Test scores and GPA are just part of what they look at, you need to be competetive for a legacy to be any help at all.

Good Luck
