Question about "matching" another college's financial aid offer

I understand that it is possible for a college to match a peer college’s financial aid offer after an appeal. If this happens, will the sophomore year financial aid offer take this into account? Or will it revert back to the original, possibly unaffordable financial aid offer that was given before the appeal?

For example—Let’s say that University X gives enough financial aid that the remaining cost of attendance is 45K. University Y gives enough financial aid for the remaining cost of attendance to be 30K. University X matches University Y’s aid offer and adjusts its aid so that its cost of attendance becomes 30K as well. The student enrolls in University X. In sophomore year, will the financial aid offer be roughly 30K, like the post-appeal aid was, or roughly 45K, like the offer was going to be originally?

(I am aware that financial aid usually decreases slightly each year as universities expect students to earn more money as they progress through college. That’s not what I’m asking about.)

There are many factors that determine if need-based financial aid changes each year, and every school that dispenses institutional aid will have its own unique policies. A general answer cannot be used to address your concern, other than to say ask the school’s financial aid department how they will treat future years for a student who has been awarded more need-based aid because another school’s offer was matched.

Agree with @BelknapPoint. No way to answer this question but you should ask your college.

However, keep in mind…your finances could also change…the need based aid for 2018-2019 will be based on 2016 income…and assets as of the day you file your aid application forms. If income and assets are higher than when you filed the 2015, it is very likely that your need based aid will be reduced.
