Question about nationalism and xenophobia

Ok, so I don’t know how many of you watch college basketball but I’m gonna ask this anyway.

Last night during the Maryland vs. Virgina Tech college basketball game, Greivis Vasquez (who plays for MD) was at the free throw line. Vasquez was born in Venezuela. While he was at the free throw line, the Virginia Tech student section started chanting “USA! USA! USA!” Do you think this is racist/xenophobic/in poor taste? Or was it merely a joke and something that was meant to be funny?

Now, for those of you who watch college bball, you know that Vasquez feeds off this type of thing and I have to believe that it didn’t really bother him that much.

What’s your opinion CC?

It’s extremely xenophobic. Venezuela has never carried out any form of aggression against the US - in fact, it’s the opposite, considering the US-backed coup attempt against Chavez in 2002. It’s just very ignorant, it’s not funny at all. It’s good that Vasquez fed off of it though.

It’s not xenophobic or nationalistic. I think it was just meant to anger Vasquez, make him do something stupid and miss the shot or, even better, be penalized.

^ You can’t rattle Vasquez. He is the most clutch player in the ACC. He feeds off that type of stuff. Stupid VT fans should know that.
