Question about O week tradition

I think I heard from a tour guide that there is a tradition that all the incoming freshmen run through the sallyport en masse at some point during O week. Is there any truth to this? And if it is true, when does it occur?

It’s matriculation, and there’s no running involved. It’s one of only two times it’s acceptable to walk through the Sallyport while you’re at Rice. The other time is graduation.

Thanks for the response. So, the matriculation, is that done all at once, or on a more spread out basis? It sounds like there’s no big ceremony about it. Is that right?

Matriculation is indeed a ceremony, and it is done all at once. I really don’t want to say much more because I don’t want to spoil it. You really don’t need to know any details about O-Week because the coordinators and advisors will make sure you’re in the right place at the right time in the right attire.

Could you just let us know if it will be Sunday? I couldn’t find it on the Sunday schedule. If answering this question will ruin things for me or others I will understand if there is no response.

you can walk IN the sallyport whenever. The tradition is about walking out

bird rock - It will be Saturday if Im not mistaken. Just wait till o-week it will be special

The main thing you need to know is that matriculation is late Sunday, so you need to have access to your dressy clothes right when you get there (don’t pack them away!)

I know it’s frustrating to not know details but when you get to your college, they will have a huge schedule up with literally every minute planned out. The colleges all plan their O-Weeks differently so a lot of your schedule will depend on your college. Also, your advisors can clarify if you have any questions about specific schedule items.

Get excited for O-Week! Your advisors start training in Houston tomorrow and we’re really excited to meet you all :)

is move in saturday or sunday?

Move-in is Sunday morning

ok… then matriculation is Sunday night. not sure why I thought move-in was Saturday. all confused

BTW, I’m a dad; it’s my son who will be attending Rice.

Maybe I should have started by asking if this is something that parents are invited to attend. From this link:

it looks like this is just for the students, since it happens after we leave.

That of course, is fine. It’s just good to know ahead of time. Especially the part about packing dressy clothes, something we wouldn’t ordinarily do for a trip to a college in Houston in August.

Yes it is only for students.
