Question about Optimum Voice--anyone?

Today we switched our home telephone service from Verizon (land line) to Optimum Voice (modem). We noticed something weird. When we try to make a call now (with optimum voice) using our speed dial (telephone numbers stored in phone’s memory), the call can’t be completed. A recorded message comes saying “call can’t be completed as dialed”. However, if we physically dial the same number by pressing the appropriate number keys, the call does go through perfectly fine.

I spoke with someone from Optimum and they said that perhaps the speed dial is dialing too fast. What? The implication was that the speed dialing dials too fast for IP phone service.
The Optimum customer service said that I should see if there is a choice in the phone’s menu to slow down the speed of the dialing. I couldn’t find any such option.

So, I have two questions.

Does anyone else on CC with Optimum voice have this issue? (of not being able to use the speed dial/stored phone book option to dial out)

How the heck do you “slow down” the speed of the speed dialing? We have a basic wireless Panasonic phone.

We finally got rid of the conventional home landline (Verizon) because converting to the Optimum voice (modem, IP telephone service) will save us about $40/month.

You do realize that if the cable OR the power goes out you’re without a phone. And even though they say they can locate you for a 911 call, I’ve heard different opinions as to whether or not they’re accurate. We keep the cheapest land line option just for emergencies. Also - check your fine print - how long is that three-for price going to last?

Does your speed dial have the “1” in front of the numbers with area codes? If not, the call won’t go through on optimum. I no longer remember if verizon required the
“1”. Also local calls in same area code must be dialed without 1 and without area code (just the 7 digit #). If that doesn’t fix it, I would try calling another rep at optimum, since the answer that you got may not be correct. We had a different problem when we first switched, and it took several reps to get if fixed. In the end, it was a “bandwidth” issue that they corrected (as in they increased the bandwidth to our service, I believe). It took someone coming to our home to see the problem to fix it.

we had to completely re-program the Panasonic system with all of our auotdial phone numbers we have after we switched from Verizon to Optimum…no idea if the “1” was the issue, but I do know that we reprogrammed.

also, not to hijack, but does anyone know how to get your callwaiting on Optimum?? the phone beeps when someone is trying to cut in, but there is no ID, nor can I figure out how to answer the other call??

After dinner, I decided to do a little trial and error with the phone because I was determined to figure out how to solve this dialing problem.

This is what I came up with:

 1. Deleted a number from the memory and reprogrammed it back into the memory. Still didn’t work.
 2. Then I deleted a number from the memory but reprogrammed it back into the memory without the including the local area code. Guess what–This solved the problem. Now I can speed dial all of my numbers. Once I deleted the local area code, the speed dialing has been working just fine. Yay!!

anothermom: You were on the right track suggesting that the problem about the inclusion of the local area code. Thanks.

gusapara: Yes, we realize that we will lose the telephone service if the power or cable.
This is why we were hesitant for so long to drop the landline. We have cell phones and we’ll use them as our backup phones.

We’re not new customers to Optimum. We’ve had the cable and internet with them “forever”. Because we weren’t new customers, they couldn’t give us the advertised TriplePlay price (cable, internet, phone). They did give us a price of $19.99/month for Optimum Voice—a very good deal. It’s $40.00 cheaper/month than what we were paying for the landline telephone through Verizon.

Funny, we also have a Panasonic system.

Thanks everyone.

nysmile, glad your phone works. I had tried to post a suggestion for rodney, but got the “server busy” error message (have no idea what that really means). Rodney, try the button to the right of 0 (# I think - don’t have phone in front of me) to pick up call waiting. You won’t get an id# but you should be able to answer the call. Press again to go back to original call.

That’s what cell phones are for!

We’ve had cable phone for years. It has saved us hundreds of dollars in the long run.

thanks anothermom; I’ll try that…
