In general, do most UCLA premed students want to become general practioners or researchers?

MD. MD/PhD is still an option, but not as widely pursued due to the time commitment.

what does the md/phd do, compared to the md?

you have more of a medical research background, so you tend to do clinical studies of new equipment, procedures, medications, etc. on patients.

Another way to put it is that more than half of all neurosurgeons have PhD’s. Take it as you wish (causation can or can not mean correlation, who knows?)

uh, you know theres a lot of space between GP and straight research lol. you can still have your own practice and do clinical research…thats what i would like to do.

you can do research with just an M.D. you don’t have to have a Ph.D…although having one makes it easier to get funding a lot of the time and opens up a lot of other opportunities
