Question About Reclassing and GPA

Hi everyone!

I’m a reclassed rising sophomore (I reclassed after my first freshman year) and I was wondering how colleges handle this. Will my first freshman year transcript be sent to colleges, and will those grades be included in my cumulative GPA?

For context, I struggled during my original freshman year (2023–2024) in public school due to social and family issues, and my GPA was around a 3.3–3.6. I then reclassed and repeated freshman year at a private school (2024–2025), where I earned about a 3.75 while taking the hardest classes available. I’m planning to keep working hard over the next few years to raise my GPA.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Yes

They likely aren’t part of the cumulative GPA that your HS computes, but that’s a question for your HS.

How, or if, a college recalculate will vary by college, and few tell you their method.

That said, an upward trend improvement is always valued

Oh alright. Thank you so much for the information!

I agree. You still have plenty of time to do well and to make yourself a strong applicant to very good universities.

Make sure that you take classes that make sense for you, and that you are ready to take. Then do your best and have faith that this will work out.

My son’s first 9th grade transcript, at another school, was NOT sent to colleges.

The thought didn’t cross our minds, and apparently it didn’t cross his private high school’s mind either.

How would a college know that there was an earlier 9th grade at a different school, unless you volunteer that information?

It’s a question on the application

My nephew’s 9th grade from another private school was sent with the full transcript from the new private school (in his case, he believes, to his detriment).

Ah. We would have answered that question, of course, if it was on the application. This particular son was applying in 2017, so perhaps the question was added after that.

It was on mine in 2015

I suppose there’s always the chance that – since the application process was managed by the boarding school – I don’t know what I am talking about! wouldn’t be the first time.

Your past is your past (not that a 3.3-3.6 is tragic, it’s not) but this is sound advice.

Look forward and when the time comes you can work with your school to craft a proper list of fantastic schools, that will most importantly and hopefully be fantastic for you.
