I have a question for current grad students. Ill be enrolled in a grad school this fall and registration for grad students at my university is in August. I was wondering if any grad students here have had trouble registering for the courses that they wanted in the past?

A few classes I was hoping to take have only a few remaining spots open apparently (I recently checked the course availability). Since registration for new grad students isnt until August, theres not much I can do about it except sit and wait to see if the classes I want fill up. I assume the people that have already registered for these courses are either current grad students or undergrads.

So Im wondering if this is a common problem. Since new grad students do not register for classes until very late, is it common to not get the courses that you wanted because they already filled up? Has anyone else had a problem like this?

I’m a bit worried because some of these classes are important to my specialty and I’m wondering if I should try to find a way to register early or email the prof who is teaching the course and see if he can open some extra spots for other students.

Any insight on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

Why don’t you ask someone at your school? I could tell you how things work in my graduate department but that won’t really help you.

First, don’t do anything until August, and then be sure to try and register as soon as you are able. You don’t want to make this an issue until it is actually a problem.

Second, some classes will fill up, but that tends to be the exception, not the rule - this is not a common problem for grad students.

Third, if you cannot get in and need the class, talk to the professor. They may be willing to let you sit in on the class until a spot opens up (as one almost certainly will within a week or two), and may be able to let you as an extra student anyway.

Are the classes you’re trying to enroll in for grad classes? If so, then you should probably be able to get a spot. Often classes have spots reserved for the grad students that are expected to take them, so you’ll only see the “open” slots for undergrads, students from other departments, etc.

I haven’t ever had a problem getting into classes as a grad student. The only class I’m aware of that’s difficult for us to get a seat in is a cooking class (and after tasting the leftovers from one of my friend’s projects I can see why).
