Question about self employment on job applications

Good Afternoon,

Earlier this month I started a business to make money on the side. An actual sole proprietorship, registered with the state and with a business license from the county. I went through all the steps to gain legitimacy. I have two small client companies in the scrap metal transportation field that I’ve done small projects for.

Many job applications ask for supervisor names in the work history section. In this case do I put myself, leave it blank, or leave a small note in the explanation box listing client companies and reference numbers?

How do I show employers that this is a small thing I do on the side that doesn’t take more than 4-10 hours a week of my time nights and weekends from my house?

Regards,

Methodologies

I would write, “self-employed” in the supervisor section.

If they ask for professional references, include the client information there since you have no supervisor references. As long as they are not friends or family, this should suffice.

If they have a section that asks why you are looking to leave your present employer, you may write that it is a part-time business to add a supplemental income, to pursue personal interests, or whatever you’d like to say. I don’t think they will be concerned about this. Are you worried they will think you won’t stay with them if your business takes off? I wouldn’t draw too much attention to it unless asked in the interview.

Also, some employers ask for previous income, so if they see you only make a small amount per month then they will infer it is not a full-time gig.

I think it’s important to know what kind of jobs you are trying to get. … so what kind of jobs are you trying to get? as in, what industry?
