Question about senior year grades for USMA

Looking through the kit, I saw that they have this little post card for senior year grades. My question is: considering how unimportant this little card looks like, does USMA look at senior year grades seriously? Do they take junior year grades more seriously?

They absolutely look at senior year grades. They will want both 7th and 8th semester grades sent to them. And like any college, if your senior year grades are not up to par, appointments can be rescinded.

All of the little cards are very important.

Agree with momoftwins - senior year grades are important. In my son’s case, I think it was his first semester senior year grades - straight A’s - and finally getting his Eagle Scout badge - that combined to get him in. Second semester is important - but by the time West Point has them (June or July) you’d better just not have dropped too much or have failed anything.

oib1, congrats on the eagle.

The look of the cards make them seem as if they arent that important because its just 4 slots and has no where near the amount of information the Junior transcript has.

By the way, oib1, how important or how good is Eagle Scout for admissions?

Re: Eagle Scout - a relatively large number of cadets participated in Boy Scouts but a small number receive the Eagle badge (about 15%). I think it shows perserverance to the Admissions Office and leadership skills. My son wasn’t an athletic captain (always a little unfair in my mind since in our local high school the coaches pick the captains, not the players) so the Eagle Badge helped on his leadership scores.

DO NOT forget to send your senior grades to WP.

Agree with Shogun. Not having 8th semester grades in to USMA could cause turn away on R-Day.

Hugh and all other candidates,

Follow all instructions carefully. Every single step. And get used to following all instructions carefully. This is only the very beginning.

My son’s school didn’t finish until three days before R-Day - so WP didn’t get his grades for 8th semester until mid-July. If you’re in the same situation, just have guidance counselor send a note to the Admissions Office.

I was freaking out about it too. My GPA crashed, 2nd semester of senior year was my hardest ever. But it turned out fine. You’ll be okay, don’t worry too much about it. Work hard and don’t fail anything, but recognize that the harder your senior year is, the easier plebe year will seem (trust me). They take junior year grades alot more seriously, as they more often than not serve as the basis to get into the Academy. Trust me, I went through exactly what your going through now a few months ago. You’ll be fine.

Mixalot, I was wondering if good senior year for a so-so junior? Also, should I send in the latest senior year grades to my nominating sources?

My junior year grades were pretty good, my senior year grades were very so-so by the end. I would say Junior year grades are more important, but they always like seeing improvement, no doubt about that. Try doing well in the first half of senior year especially, as this will help you more. I would just send what they ask for unless you think it will help. Give your congressmen a call and ask, as well. The horrible senior year is definatley paying off now, trust me. Good luck.

a lot of senior’s grades bomb out by the end of the year. It’s what theyre supposed to do ;)
