Question about Stanford course conflicts

Hey there,

I’m an incoming Freshman interested in majoring in electrical engineering with a minor in economics. However, I was playing around with my schedule next autumn on the CourseRank website and it seems that the physics 40 series lecture conflicts with econ 1a/b lecture, which is the first course towards the econ minor i have to take.

For the Autumn '11-12 quarter, it appears that physics 45 has only one section of lecture from 9:00-9:50 and 10:00-10:50. Econ 1a has its lecture from 10:00-10:50. This is the case for all the physics and econ 1a/b sections, so they would conflict for every quarter. Are there no other options? Does this seriously mean that I can’t take the econ macro/micro classes due to conflicts with the physics? And why does the physics seem to have two lectures, with a 10 minute break in between?

thanks guys

Hey there Enigma,

Well firsts things first: it’s great that you’re already looking into classes but realize that you’ll have several people advising you on your classes and their feasibility when you get here. Second, if you’re thinking about majoring in engineering than the Undergraduate Engineering Handbook is your friend ([Main Page - Undergraduate Engineering Handbook](<a href=“SoE Undergrad Handbook”>SoE Undergrad Handbook)). This will help you see different ways a EE major could be structured and all its intricacies. Is the bulletin even out for next year? Try checking if it is by looking into the bulletin (bulletin.stanford.edu).

Finally addressing your actual question: that seems to be a fluke in courserank (again not official for a reason). Physics 45 is probably going to be offered at two different times 9 and 10 am.

Hope that helps!

PS: for Econ minors and really any major outside engineering check the bulletin for more information on requirements.

Yeah, ExploreCourses says physics 45 is offered at two times: 9:00-9:50 and 10:00-10:50. So take the 9am physics class and the 10am econ class. :)

class schedules that are up (for the classes that are up already) are only tentative. many of them will change
classes change every quarter, but physics series classes are only offered once per year (in the respective sequence quarter)
