I took Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 through an online summer class. My High school counsellor only put Spanish 1 which was completed in my 10th grade year on my high school transcript. The district had a 10 credit cap on classes per discipline which I already filled for foreign language. My counsellor told me not to do Spanish 2 online over the summer hence the credit limit but I did it anyways. Am I still A-G eligible?
If I apply to a UC or a Cal State, would they accept two transcripts coming from my main High School and my summer program which is Mission Academy. Keep in mind Mission Academy is WASC accredited and all there classes are listed as A-G eligible on the A-G Course list. Would this also bypass my district’s rule of the 10 credit cap?
Are you a California resident?
Maybe the rules have changed since our children attended their high school because foreign language taken online, was not considered the same experience as taking it in the classroom. Bantering with classmates, back and forth, was expected and a reason our district didn’t allow online credit for foreign language.
Students could take a community college course, in a foreign language, for credit. But the online courses, even with other students, wasn’t credited. The district couldn’t confirm that daily practice was occurring within the online classes.
It’s the constant daily practice of speaking in a foreign language that increases the fluidity.
So I ask again, are you a California high school student? The diploma requirements in California are extremely strict.
Im a California resident, our school district allows us to take summer online courses as long as they are A-G accredited institutions, but there is a rule in our district at least stating that 10 credits are allowed from outside institutions.
Keep in mind, Mission Academy is listed in the A-G course catalog, but my counsellor refuses to put it in my High School transcript because I’m already over the limit for the Foreign Language discipline, so the idea is that ill have to state that I did Spanish 1 with my High School, and ill also have to send in my transcript from Mission Academy.
We are in California and in our public district, students can take any UC approved course, including online language classes, for high school credit (and college credit if going to a UC or Cal State). This is very common at our high school. I agree with you it’s not good for learning’s sake.
But you didn’t take these at your own high school? I hope this works out OK for you…but there are colleges that do recommend at least to level three of the same foreign language and unless I’m missing something…you don’t have that.
