so im applying to ucd in the fall, but my hs transcript has some garbage one there thats going to give me hell for sure. basically the entire half of this year (junior year) i was really depressed, like on meds and the whole enchilada. consequently i have to make up a lot of those classes, and i am. other than that bad semester, i was an almost straight A student. i have really high test scores and i expect next time i take the SATs, i should score at least 2000.

so my issue is US history. i got D’s both semesters, and i dont have room to retake both semesters. im wondering if theres any way i can explain what happened on my application and perhaps get a little leniency. or am i just tough out of luck? thanks.

Write about them in your essays! Like how you learned from your mistakes, or determined to tackle a subject that’s challenging to you. I had a C and a D for Honors Chemistry sophomore year, and I explained why and how I’ve changed on my essays.

Can you take a US History class at a community college for one semester (college semesters usually equal one year of hs, right?) and use that to replace the class you got a D in? You may be able to get it done this summer.

I always thought HS work didn’t matter, and that they used your high school transcripts to fulfill foreign language reqs or AP’s, and to see if you graduated hs?

Another possible subsitute might be the SAT II in US History. If you are able to study hard and earn a very high score they might be willing to overlook your grade. (With an explaination of course)

ahh collegemom i thought of that, and i took the US history sat on june 2nd but apparently it was freakishly hard. i studied a LOT too, and was getting 750’s on the practice tests. i doubt i did very well; in fact there was a thread in the SAT prep area of this site where there was a consensus among most students that the test was much harder than usual. but i will be re-taking it in the fall.

anyway, thanks for the suggestions everyone. i emailed UCD to see if they’d accept credit from a community college if i took a spanish class, because if they do i’ll have an open slot to retake the entire history course. hopefully they do…

High school coursework in all grade levels, especially 9th and 10th grade, will count for freshman applicants. However, high school coursework won’t be taken into account for transfer applicants. I’m concerned about you meeting the two year History/Social Science “a” subject requirement. Please note you must complete one year of US history, or one half year of US History and one half year or civics or American government, and one year of world history. With out this you would not be meeting UC eligibility requirements.
A score of 550 on the SAT US History exam, a college level course or retaking the course your senior year can help with the subject deficiency but, won’t help your GPA. If you have any questions, please contact our office at (530) 752-2971.
