question about the essay...

I recently took the ACT for the first and realized that I made a big mistake on the essay by arguing both sides. Do you think my essay would receive a 0 or can I potentially get a good score. I know you have to pick a side and I guess my anxiety about the essay affected my understanding of the prompt instructions.

well you have to include a counterarugment, but did you lean towards one side or the other? I think you can get an average score, but then again, i don’t have your exact essay so that’s just a guess haha.

Honestly, I feel liked I lean towards disagreeing see as that was the longest paragraph. I’m just worried about how did on that portion as opposed to the rest of the exam…

*I feel like I leaned towards disagreeing see as

Okay well that’s good then. Can you tell me what your thesis was?

Did you quote any famous books or people?

No, I couldn’t think of any, the essay had to do with whether or not parents should use gps technology to track their children.

Well, I don’t think it’s even possible for you to even get a zero in that case  Minimum score, unless you were COMPLETELY off-topic, is a 2. Do you remember if you had a thesis that explicitly stated something to the effect of “I disagree”?

Unfortunately I didn’t explicitly state whether I agreed or disagreed. I did an intro, one paragraph from an agreeing perspective, one from a disagreeing perspective and a conclusion.

It says on the directions that you can choose your own viewpoint on it

Do you think that arguing both sides shows that I presented a different argument? The essay talked about the use of GPS technology affecting a teenager’s behavior. I simply argued from an agreeing and a diagreeing parental point of view about whether or not parents should even use the tracking technology.

I could be wrong but I think they want you to write a persuasive essay, which would require you to take a firm position on one side. However, I don’t know for certain

I’m just worried, because I feel like I did really well on the exam as well as the essay. I hope the essay doesn’t hurt my score too much although I heard that it isn’t averaged into your composite score since it’s optional. I have to double check the site. If not, I’ll just take the ACT one or two in the fall more times and continue prepping over the summer.

Yeah it doesn’t go into your composite but they will do a composite of your English and writing, but it isn’t factored into your overall composite. I wouldn’t worry about it too much, you’ll probably get points off but it shouldn’t be too bad I would say

Yeah I won’t worry about it too much, thanks.
