Hello. I’m applying to A&M and I’m trying to predict my financial aid. I haave a need of 22k and I reading past students FA awards to estimate how much my award would be. And typically, students receive the Stafford loans, (5.5k) and the Perkins loan (5.5k) with my estimated 2.5k work study. But then I saw this on their finaincail aid page.
Does this mean my FA award won’t receive a Perkins loan? Becuase then I would only have 7k out of 22k need met and the school meets on average 73% need. What does that paragraph above mean?
The Perkins Loan Program will close effective September 30, 2017, as required by the Federal Perkins Loan
Program Extension Act of 2015. No new Perkins loans may be made after this date.
I think it would be doubtful that you will receive a Perkins loan.
I am not an expert, but I don’t think you would’ve received both the max Stafford and max Perkins loan anyway.

A&M has a list of awards they give to everyone depending on their need that provide a minium of 10k in awards if your need is greater 15k. So I shouldn’t recieve an award of only 7k with a need of 22k right?
The NPC says I’ll pay anywhere from $0 to 22343
Books, transportation, personal expenses (anything besides room, board and tuition)
I think it’s going to be kind of unpredictable this year. We will be rooting for you though. When I was a student way back in the day, they did meet all of my need and it was high. Hopefully you can find a student or two who is there currently and has a similar EFC. Did you ask on the A&M board?
Maybe next week when the FA offices opens up you can contact them and ask? (I would wait until after the first week of classes!)
I’m assuming you have some absolute financial safeties on your list like UT Dallas and UT Arlington? At UT Arlington you would for sure get $8,000 per year and if you lived at home you would pretty much go to school for free (maybe 1-2K left over in book expenses and such).
Is your family income under $60,000? If so, see above link for Aggie Assurance
What was your EFC on your most recent FAFSA? When did you file the FAFSA?
From a public university you can expect federal and state aid you qualify for, maybe a SEOG grant, work study, Perkins loan, if your EFC is very low and you applied for FA early. Sometimes a school will give scholarships or institutional grants.
