question about transfering

<p>Hey guys, im kind of confused on how transferring works. According to cornell’s transfer statistics, they took in 569 students in 2009 ([Cornell</a> University Undergraduate Admissions Office - HOW TO APPLY](<a href=“http://admissions.cornell.edu/apply/transfer/classprofile.cfm]Cornell”>http://admissions.cornell.edu/apply/transfer/classprofile.cfm)) Does this mean that there were 569 spots open? like in order for this to happen, 569 students must have left cornell at that time? or does the college keep more spots that it accepts through the regular decision process (IE getting accepted in freshman year)?</p>

<p>Cornell’s transfer acceptance rate is misleadingly high because it includes guaranteed transfers. </p>

<p>You could probably figure out (roughly) how many students transfer out of Cornell by looking at its retention rates. </p>

<p>Students study abroad, transfer, and take time off all the time. Colleges have an estimate on the number of students who do this in a given year.</p>

<p>^ includes guaranteed transfers and internals, as well, which make up a really high proportion of those numbers. cornell has a 96% retention rate, so not that many people leave.</p>
