Im planning on taking math 140 over the summer to transfer credits over. I looked at the transfer credit tool and the school that I plan on transferring credits from has a direct equivalent to math 140 but this is the problem:
GREENVILLE TECHNICAL COLLEGE (#100124015 ) MAT 240 / 4.00 MATH 140 Calc Anal Geom I 4.00
Comments:
This course is a direct equivalent.
MAT 240 is actually calculus with analytical geometry 3, So Im confused at to what I should do.
These are the course descriptions I found, and MAT 140 seems to fit the bill of Math 140 a lot more than MAT 240.
MAT 240 Analytical Geometry & Calculus III (4-0-4)*
Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer Semesters
Prerequisite: MAT 141
This course includes the following topics: multivariable calculus, including vectors; partial derivatives and their applications to maximum and minimum problems with and without constraints; line integrals; multiple integrals in rectangular and other coordinates; and Stokes’ and Green’s theorems.
MAT 140 Analytical Geometry and Calculus I (4-0-4)*
Offered Fall, Spring, and Summer Semesters
Prerequisite: MAT 111 or satisfactory placement
This course includes the following topics: derivatives and integrals of polynomial, rational, logarithmic, exponential, trigonometric, and inverse trigonometric functions; curve sketching; maxima and minima of functions; related rates; work; and analytic geometry.
The second one seems to what really is the equivalent to math 140, what should I do?
Call the department at PSU and ask.
@bodangles I did and they told me to submit a course evaluation after I complete the class.
Then I’d take 140 instead of 240 and follow their instructions. Sounds like a glitch/mistake in the credit tool.
@bodangles should I be worried about it not counting towards a math 140 credit, I get anxious about this kind of stuff.
That would be a question for the department. To me it sounds like a direct equivalent, and it’s probably the course they intended to put in the transfer credit tool. But I would pursue it until you get a concrete answer. It’s not cool that the credit tool gave you bad information, and they should fix that.
What does the transfer tool say about Math 140? is it possible both courses are equal to The PSU math? Are they the same amount of credits?
Both 4 credits, same name (somewhat) but the class that they listed as a course equivalent was a class thats equivalent to math 230 here and other calc 3 classes. My guess is that either back then the numbers for the course at the tech college was different or they just screwed up.
@bodangles The thing is I have been told countless times by my adviser and the department that I have to take the course first and then they will let me know, which isn’t right but I dont know what else to do. I could try to go to the math department in person and brink the course description but they might just give me the same answer.
@greenbutton From the description of the course, MAT 240 is definitely Calc 3, but the credit tool says it’s equal to PSU Calc 1. I do not believe that is accurate.
@thatdude2020 It might be worth calling / visiting the math department. Emphasize that the transfer credit tool appears to be incorrect. If they can’t give you a straight answer, my last resort would be the info listed on the credit tool page – Undergraduate Admissions Office The Pennsylvania State University 201 Shields Building University Park, PA Tel: (814) 865-5471
Someone needs to fix that thing or it’ll screw over other students too.
I would take screenshots, and email them to admissions saying you think there is a mistake in the transfer tool. If you are at UP, going in person will be faster. But ultimately, it’s the math dept that decides on the transfer evaluation so perhaps you could get a math prof to look at the screenshot and your course, and write something down you coyld send to (take to) admissions. I myself share your worry that you could take the class and end up with the wrong PSU equivalent.
@greenbutton @bodangles I emailed admissions and they basically said that what ever the credit tool says goes, so Im probably just going to take math 140 on world campus over the summer because I know thats a direct equivalent.
Gonna email the math department now.
Ugh. Glad you have another option.
OP, please fill out this form. It’s a course review form for the math department. Good luck!
