Question about transferring from UVA & chances

I’m currently a first year at UVA studying Engineering. I’m thinking of transferring to Rutgers NB (either A&S or Business School) for a number of reasons:

1) Cost- I would save $60,000 by continuing my undergraduate education at Rutgers in-state as opposed to UVA out-of-state (and go into massive debt)
2) Location- I would like to be closer to home, as Rutgers is only 25 minutes away, so I can go home on weekends if needed
3) Return on Investment- Rutgers Business School was ranked 6th in country for best return on investment
4) Jewish Community- UVA has a very small Jewish community, but Rutgers has a much larger one, which is important to me
5) Diversity- I hear Rutgers has a very diverse undergraduate population

I am happy here at UVA, but am a very flexible person and feel that I would love Rutgers just as much. At Rutgers, I would probably study either Mathematics and become an actuary, or study accounting in the business school. Does anyone know how the reputations/academic rigors of the Math department and Business school are? What kind of town is New Brunswick? Are there a lot of activities and things to do on weekends?

Stats:
College GPA- 3.61 in Engineering courses
SATs- 1420; SAT II- Math 2: 740, Physics: 700, French: 690
ACT- 32
Class Rank- Top 5% of HS class (Took many AP classes as well)
ECs in HS- Marching Band (4 years, section leader), NHS member, Swim Team (2 years), AP Scholar, Transition Project (peer leader), won award in a National French Test, Jazz Band (3 years), etc.
ECs in College- University Democrats, Hillel, First Year Leadership Development Program, Madison House (volunteering/tutoring once a week), etc.

I sent in my application online by the priority deadline for transfers, but the other credentials should be in by this week hopefully.

I welcome any advice/input whether I should stay at UVa or transfer to Rutgers in-state.

Thanks!

I am very, very biased since i attend rutgers and know people who have gone or are attending uva, and I must say that I think you should transfer. This is not a stab at uva, which is a very good school, but rutgers is up there as well.

The Business School has a very good reputation among rutgers students and companies and such and has an arduous program. I know a lot of people who are graduating this year and already have jobs lined up for them. Also, there is a jewish business frat, which sounds good for you, if you’re into that kind of thing.

Cost is a very big issue for me, and is probably the main reason why I chose rutgers (I wasn’t even going to apply.) Also, with your stats, you can get the 7,500/year scholarship that I have and transfer into the honors program. The honors program helps a lot; you get nicer housing, smaller community, closer contact with faculty/staff/your academic adviser who will most likely be an undergrad dean, and a wider selection of even more intellectually stimulating classes.

as for what to do on weekends, I usually stay in with my floormates, go out to new brunswick, do stuff on our campus (douglass) or visit another campus, and you know, there is the occasional party.

New Brunswick is…I don’t know how to describe it. George street gets nicer as you go towards college ave, but on the other end, towards commercial ave, it kind of reminds me of queens, where I grew up. There are tons of nice, zagat-worthy restaurants downtown (on george street) that are perfect for dates. And little shops, also convenience/grocery stores if you need to do some shopping.

So there is stuff to do on the weekends, you just have to look for them. Rutgers is kind of a party school, but what school isn’t?

How do I get the $7500 scholarship as a transfer student? As a first year student, I was offered a lucrative 4-year scholarship, but I talked to the admissions office on the phone and they said that they are only for first years, not transfer students. Are there still scholarships for transfers not coming from community college?

oops hmm. sorry, I didn’t consider that they wouldn’t give scholarships to transfers. they seriously don’t offer any kind of scholarship for transfers?

well, it’s still cheaper than UVA at its full in state price.

Absolutely. I’m still on the fence about it, but I appreciate any extra advice/input. Also, what are my chances of getting in?

Thanks.

I’ve actually heard that they do give scholarships to transfers, just not the “really big” ones. I don’t really know what that means, but it wouldn’t hurt to look into it.

and are you serious about the last question? your stats are fantastic.

oh and also, rutgers has some really good networking. the alumni association here is top notch, so finding a job is significantly easier, so I’ve heard. and if you’re looking into business, I would say the rutgers bs is more reputable than uva’s, especially if you want to be an investment banker or something in the city, I would think that ny companies would be more familiar/impressed by rutgers bs than uva’s. just something to think about, the close proximity to home/lucrative job opportunities.

yo, I was in a similar situation as you (Identical stats for the most part), and I actually made the transfer. There are no scholarships transferring from a four year university, trust me I argued forever about it. I also was given a nice scholarship as a freshman which I did not take since I went to the University of Pittsburgh, so your not going to get one now that you transfer. Private message me if you want more info, like I’ll let you know my stats and what I’ve thought of it here so far.

Scholarships for transfers seem to be few and far between, unless you come from a community college. I had a 3.8 my freshman year of college before transferring here and got absolutely nothing.

That said, I’d come to Rutgers if only for saving all that money. It could be used for grad school, if you want to go.

From what I can tell, we have a huge jewish population. Chabad and Hillel both seem very big, and I know Hillel has shabbat dinners every friday night. I’m not jewish so this is just what I’ve noticed as opposed to experienced.

If you plan on doing Accounting, I’d certainly suggest transferring to Rutgers. The Accounting majors here are pretty heavily recruited (or at least it seems to me, a finance major) by the Big 4 and I’m pretty sure just about all of them will have a job offer before graduation. Their first semester in the Business School was intense, so be forewarned, but I think it almost served as a bonding for them.

Since you’d be coming in as a transfer, I believe you’d also have to take the prerequisites before applying to RBS (or at least the majority of them): Intro to Micro, Intro to Macro, Calc I, Computer Applications, Into to Stats for Business, Intro to Financial Accounting. Have you taken any of those? If not, it might set you back a little.

Yes, I have taken some of those courses. I am currently taking Intro to Micro, and Intro to Computer Science (which should count for Computer Applications). Also, I have already taken Calculus BC in high school, so the calc requirement is waived. I guess I would only have to take Intro to Macro, Into to Stats for Business, and Intro to Financial Accounting next year, which should be manageable.

I would check if intro to comp sci does count. rutgers can be a little…finnicky when it comes to transferring credits, just to be sure.

I can’t believe what I am reading. My son and I just went to the accepted students day at Rutgers for the School of Arts & Sciences Honors Program. I was really impressed with the Honors program - it seems the best of those I have seen so far.

My son is waiting to hear from UVa and seems willing to take out loans to afford the difference between Rutgers and UVa. I can’t seem to talk him out of it, so I am wondering whether your parents tried to talk you out of it a year ago, and why you didn’t choose R back then (and what has changed your mind.)

By the way, Rutgers reputation in Business is not as good as UVa… U Va is ranked #2 by Business Week, Rutgers is #32. But since, Rutgers is convenient to NYC there is a lot of recruiting from NYC.

Are you directing that question to me?

I"d love to hear from you venom and jdavid also

For everyone who transferred after attending another 4-year university, what were your reasons for transferring?

Just curious to see if there are any reasons in common with mine.

BusinessWeek rankings are a load of baloney. Anything that has McIntire and Menedoza above Stern, Ross, and Wharton is absolute trash. With that said, UVa does have a better b-school reputation than Rutgers, but again, proximity to the city, a focus on finance, and a large alumni pool doesn’t make Rutgers entirely unattractive either.

agreed lurker. well put. :D

bro you are guaranteed admission at Rutgers but stay at UVA, its one of the best schools in the country.

sure Rutgers is one of the most diverse schools in the country but if your a white jewish kid, the number of indian, arab, black, hispanic, asian etc. kids in the school really isnt a big deal.

as a jewish person myself, i understand the whole not a lot of jews thing but the jewish frats/soroities are great. the big 3 are SAMMY, ZBT and AEPi. although beware jewish frats are usually one of the worst when it comes to hazing…

but seriously UVA is not even comparable to rutgers academically and Rutgers isnt a bad school.

I’ve officially decided that I’m transferring to Rutgers next year. I got my official acceptance online today. Thanks everyone for all your support and input!

jdavid89

im sorry but to throw away an education from one of the top schools in the country is a huge mistake…
