If I am waiting on results for a January/February award (National Merit Finalists, Regeneron STS, etc.) should I clarify in the addl. info section? Is there any way to update these schools with the result if the application is due in early January?
No need to use space in addt’l info for these things, as AOs know the timing. You should be able to update your app through your school portals. If there’s not a place to do that, send your AO an email with pertinent updates.
I would not update for going from NMSF to NMF, as the vast majority of students do and that won’t move the needle. If you make it to the top 300 and then again top 40 for Regeneron STS, you can update on those. Good luck.

Is Top 300 by itself not much of an achievement? I’m not sure what the “prestige” would be for awards like this.
The top 300 is top 10%-15% or so typically. So, not super awesome, but also not inappropriate for a quick update. IMO of course. You could also ask your high school counselor what they think.
