Question about work study and unemployment

Can you receive unemployment when your hours are completed for work study lets say you worked Spring and Fall, but they don’t let you work in the Summer?

Well, I don’t have the technical details but since no one else is responding…

No, I don’t believe you would qualify for unemployment during the summers. If so, then hundreds of thousands of college students would be seeking unemployment checks every summer!

I’m trying to reason out the why of this question. Well, first off, it is a part time job. You are not paying in unemployment insurance. It is also not a “real” job - it is part of financial aid packages (and I think somewhat government subsidized?). In any case, I have never ever heard of someone getting unemployment when Work Study ran out. Am now curious to hear the specific reason it doesn’t qualify.

PS - a quick web search and what I’ve found is that it is just a matter of how the laws are written. For example, in Minnesota, “work study” jobs simply do not qualify for unemployment benefits. Found the same for a few other states and presume it will be the same everywhere. Since student work study is considered “temporary work” by its very nature, it just doesn’t get covered under unemployment laws.

No, you cannot.

Thanks for the replies really appreciate it. I live in California and apparently I heard someone getting unemployment, but I think its just lies I wanted to confirm it thanks.

When I was in college, it was possible to get food stamps and welfare under certain situations–may still be possible under certain scenarios, but most of those provisions have been closed. The main thing is that you are a dependent of your parent while still in college for tax, benefits, scholarships, financial aid purposes. Now your parents may be able to get some of these benefits easier than you since they have you as a dependent.

I doubt you can get unemployment. I have been looking at my schools work study jobs and many of them offer 40 hrs/ week during summer. So if you want a job during the summer you might have a easier time finding one on/ near your school campus.

Ya I have heard of those services however I feel that I don’t need them (i live with my parents) and I think its for people that really need them and are in harsh times (as some abuse which is sad). Ya I believe my parents should get those benefits easy.

I wish I could of worked in the summer the only way is I was suppose to get 6 units (I always got 3 units when I was in college). Rejected it I didn’t want to have 6 units and work especially where I live its just hot all I wanted was to work a day for a couple of hours. I also applied to a couple of places and none never called.

Thanks once again :)

My son ended up netting more on unemployment last year than he would have gotten working. He got the maximum benefit for the minimum pay, just by chance. Wish he had your attitude. We had to sit him down and explain to him that he did not win a lottery and that we were not proud of him.

^^
Youu could have lived off campus during the summer.
