So, in my high school, there are certain courses where the teachers simply do not give A’s in and thus tend to be avoided by all the top students. But in order to take the most ap’s possible per year, it is impossible to avoid these classes.

So, basically are the negative effects of a low U.W cancelled, if you have a very high class rank, such as.

3.9 g.p.a rank 1/800 (only valedictorian)

Or is it more beneficial to be

4.0 g.p.a rank 5/800?

Or, are the two differences so dismal, that they are practically identical?

Thank you.

I’d like to say yes, but of course there are many other factors that might complicate the answer.

Colleges do consider GPAs differently between different high schools, as they know a 4.0 earned at X school may be easier to obtain than at Y school. Also, they do look at rigor of course selection. Many colleges look favorably upon the student who challenges him/herself in honors, AP, or IB classes.

In short, it’s more beneficial to be person 1.

rank 1 3.9 means more than rank 5 4.0.

Your misuse of the word dismal raises doubts over whether this question is pertinent.

minuscule sorry, wrote this question in a hurry

are the negative effects of a low U.W cancelled, if you have a very high class rank
You are not quoting a low UW gpa. Number 1 and number 5, out of 800, at a rigorous school, with a challenging curriculum behind you…are both good. You will be evaluated holistically. Your test scores, essays, ECs and recs must be good.

Oh, and imagine this: if your school is rigorous and you skip obvious AP classes, adcoms will notice- and wonder why.
