Question for a friend:

My boyfriend is planning on externally transferring to NYU-CAS for the fall 2011 semester. He’s currently a sophmore at Stony Brook.

No, this is NOT a “CHANCE ME” friend - he just needs help/opinions.
He’s been ranked within the top 3 (out of over 500) people in all of his biochemistry classes since he arrived at SBU. He has a 3.8 GPA, recommendations from both the chair of the biology department (a Columbia graduate) and a chemistry professor. He’s a TA for bio and chem and he’s also the youngest ever TA at SBU (he graduated early from HS). He’s a tutor, a guitar teacher, blah blah

Those are his main stats. My questions are:

 1. What can he do to strengthen his application? What is he missing?
 2. What is NYU looking for in transfer applicant essays?
 3. Any other comments!

Thank you all!

bump! 10char

NYU looks for candidates who will succeed not only academically but after undergrad as well. If your, ahem, boyfriend’s credentials are as strong as you say, he should be in good shape (provided he is relatively competitive SAT, hsGPA-wise). Tailor the essay to a life experience that will set him apart from the competition- namely overcoming adversity. If no such story exists-make one up; Admissions committees love creativity. Just kidding- seriously though, Stony Brook is a mediocre underling, thus the essay must be persuasive.

Alright, thanks, schwar
