Question for current students

I’m wondering how hard would doing a Business Administration Major through Kenan with Pre-Med courses be at UNC-CH? Or Econ with a Pre-Med track? I plan on applying to a MD/MBA program after undergrad.

Also, how does the Business Administration major work through Kenan? Do you get in as a freshman or as a sophomore?

Yes, it is possible, especially if you have some AP credits to cover some of your UNC Foundations, Approaches or Connections course requirements. Keep in mind however, that most med schools do not accept AP credits against their prerequisite courses. So take those classes at UNC. Plus you will need them for MCAT prep anyway.

Students who have completed their first year at UNC are eligible to apply for the KF Undergraduate Business admission beginning July 1 to start as soon as the following spring semester. There are several KF course prerequisites as well. Those do not need to be completed by the time you apply to KF, but they do need to be completed by the start of the semester for which you are admitted.

I failed to answer your question about “how hard it is”. Since med school admissions are known for requiring strong GPAs, you will definitely be studying your butt off… see you in the library!

Craaaaaappppp. Hopefully my AP credits will help me significantly. Thanks for the info, though.

Anyone else?

It depends on the type of student you are (well, become…college studying is way different than high school studying). It’s definitely doable, however, your first couple of years might be a little (or a lot) overwhelming. I say this because some of the business pre-reqs are demanding, and science courses are on a whole different level.

If you manage to juggle that and STILL get into the b-school though, it’s definitely doable after that. I don’t personally know anyone in KF planning to do med school though, and you don’t sound that interested in business. I would look into the minor. It’s not any easier to get accepted, but the load would be lighter.

Actually, if you can avoid business all together, I would do that. KF focuses heavily on your grades the first two years. Med school obviously looks at GPA too, but KF doesn’t care how you do in science classes as much. They look at your pre-req GPA first, and then overall GPA. So you might stretch yourself thin trying to please both ends of the spectrum. I’m not saying you’re not capable, but a pre-business and a pre-med track together would mean semesters heavily loaded with science and math classes your first two years, not to mention all the graduation requirements that are for the most part, just a pain to get rid of. That sounds awful (to me, at least).

I would look into focusing in one area, if you can/are not too sure of what you want. If you’re really set on business AND med school though, I’m not trying to scare you away! It is doable, you would just have a lot more on your plate than the average student.

I mean it might be a little less stressful coming in with some AP credits, right?

Does the specific MD/MBA program require a business undergrad degree? If not, why not just set yourself up for a good foundation for future business learning (focus on mathematics, economics, maybe some psychology/marketing/communications) and then really focus on your pre-med classes? You can then take your business “pre-req” classes at your own pace and take them as you have time.

Then, if you find yourself in the situation that you’re just an exceptional student who can make solid grades in your pre-med classes, you could pursue other opportunities which would be attractive to that type of program–like an internship, work experience, or significant leadership in an extra curricular.

No they don’t require any business undergraduate degree. From the schools I’ve looked at you have to be enrolled in medical school first before you can apply for the MD/MBA. I didn’t know this until yesterday…lol

So I was looking at some pre-Req’s and stuff yesterday and I saw that with my current AP scores and AP exams for next year (considering I do well) I could place out of almost half the Pre-Req’s. I also place out of introductory BIOL classes and physics classes so yeah.

I’m basically lost on whether I should major in Biology and take a bunch of extra business-related classes (or minor in Business) or major in Business Administration while taking pre-med classes and some higher level health related classes.

I’m also curious about what the UNC General Education curriculum is. Like what are the required courses for all undergrads regardless of major?

Even if you place out of pre-med requirements, you should check with med schools on whether or not they accept the AP credits as acceptable per-requisites for applying. Like someone above said, they don’t always do and, in some cases (particularly science), it’s better to take the intro course here before taking the next course. I know some friends who came in with Bio/Chem AP credits and were so lost in the 102 course they had to drop. Just something to consider, especially if it’s been a while since you took the AP course.

Anyhow, your major depends on what you like best/what you really want to do after graduating. Business or medicine? Those are very, very different fields. I came into UNC as a biology major wanting to be a vet… two years later I have no desire to go down that track haha. The good thing is you have time to decide. You don’t have to apply to the B-School till fall sophomore year, and you don’t have to officially declare a major till that spring. My advice would be to try out pre-reqs for both and see if you can handle/prefer both or just one or the other. You might even end up a PWAD major… who knows.

As far as gen eds go, they are a pain, but you can get out of a few with AP credits. There are so many that it’s not worth typing out here- you can look at the undergrad bulletin (which you can access online) for explanations, and if you do a quick search, there is a list of all the classes under each category somewhere. You can also use connect carolina to search for classes that fulfill a specific requirement/use tar heel tracker to keep track of your progress.

Edit: jk. Just checked, the list is also in the undergrad bulletin so everything you need to know about those is there. Keep in mind not all classes are offered every semester.

I do plan on taking a lot of basic business related classes to see if I am really interested in it. For pre-med, I’ll only be placing out of introductory Bio(+lab) and intro Physics(+lab) i think. Oh and Calc 1 and 2
