Question for those familiar w/Chicago-Union Station

S is taking the Megabus back into Chicago late tonight - suppose to arrive 11:30-midnight at Union Station. I know the area is expecting some snow. I want to encourage him to consider taking a cab from Union Station to his apt in the Gold Coast/State Street area - no truding through snow with a suitcase even if it is just a couple blocks.

Can you tell me if cabs are likely to be hanging around Union Station at that time of evening? I ran a cab fare estimate on a website and looks like somewhere around $10 - seems well worth it to me for door to door service.

From my favorite travel web site:

Haha Toledo - that was the ONE reference I found that seemed to indicate there would be! Sounds like he would need to be on the Canal St side. I’m hoping he will consider it.
(lets not go into the whole “well if you weren’t arriving at midnight…”)

Yes there are normally cabs at all hours the train station is open. They are usually waiting at the exits. I’ve seen them there all the way up to closing hours and a little thereafter.

I think any time you have some sort of mass transit arriving… bus, train, plane, etc., you’re going to have cabs lined up. I’m sure those cab drivers know the bus and Amtrak schedules and know where to go get their fares. But yes, you’d need to be on the correct side of the station.

Thank you - happily, he has agreed to probably take the cab instead of the train.

While it probably won’t be too bad when he arrives, we will be under a wind chill advisory starting around 3AM, so even by midnight, the winds might not be his friends; and even though it’s only just over three blocks to State from the station, those winds will whip down those east/west streets from the lake and really make him grateful he’s in a cab.

Lake Effect snow warning from 11PM Monday to 9AM Tuesday. If he’s used to living in Chicago, he’ll be just fine taking the L or walking a few blocks but cab drivers can use the fares!
