My 14 year old D is attending a program at UCLA that ends the morning of July 16. She also could leave after 6:30 the night before but I now know the 405 closure starts at 7 pm so that doesn’t help. I have an older relative who, before knowing the dates, had agreed to drive my D to the airport. Once she realized the dates, she shied away as she believes it would take ‘all day’ and I really don’t want to inconvenience in that way anyway.

I’ve asked UCLA if there are other kids who need to get to the airport, thinking that I could see if we could get a group to go together with a car service but, thus far, UCLA hasn’t been helpful as the transportation to/from piece seems beyond their percieved scope…perhaps I just have to get over it but I’m not that comfortable with my 14 yo going by herself in a taxi or hired car…even if I could get comfortable with it, I’m not sure what time to make her flight reservations as I have no idea how long the car ride will take. Anyone have any suggestions for me?

I thought that the southbound closure is only from the 101 to the Getty Center exit – and from UCLA your daughter would be getting on south of that. Is SuperShuttle suggesting that UCLA-area folks are going to have a really bad time of it?

You don’t need the 405 to get to LAX from UCLA, but all side streets will be impacted. The shuttles will be taking side streets. I would suggest Flyaway from the Westwood location which appears to be by UCL and which is the cheapest and most reliable way to get to LAX. Maybe you can contact them or search their site to see what the plans are for that weekend. Flyaway tends to know all the alternate routes to the airport. Below is a link from LAX on how to manage that weekend.

I used to see Supershuttle all the time at the dorms at UCLA dropping off/picking up students for transport to LAX. I think it’s a viable, safe means of transport and I’d guess there are others who’d be on the same shuttle as your D. Like ‘arabrab’ said, call them and ask what their recommendations are for whatever timeframe she plans to leave. I’m sure they’ve considered the impact of the construction on routes and time.

Thank you for the responses…I think super shuttle is the way to go as they’ll pick up my D at the dorm. She hasn’t been to UCLA and doesn’t know the area so I think that’s better than the Flyaway where she’d need to get from her dorm with her luggage and try to find the meeting spot. May be no big deal but, since we don’t know the campus and don’t know how far apart the two locations are, it doesn’t feel that comfortable. I’ll call super shuttle and ask what they’re suggesting with regard to timing. Thanks for the help!

It’s roughly a mile from the dorm area to the Flyaway stop (as they show it on their website - on Kinross between Veteran and Weyburn). It’s funny - I used Google street view to see exactly where the Flyaway stop is and there’s the actual Flyaway bus sitting there.

The SuperShuttle stops right at the dorm and I think costs around $15 so it’s more than the Flyaway bus but it’s still only $15.

This closure is going to be an absolute nightmare. The 405 will be closed from the 101 (Valley) to the 10 (Santa Monica Freeway). Since UCLA is adjacent to the 405 and people will be trying to use Sunset or Wilshire to get around, the already really bad traffic on those streets will be horrendous. People are being begged to just stay home and not go out that weekend at all if they can avoid it.

When making the plane reservations give your daughter four hours leeway at least, even though it’s normally just a 40 minute trip to the airport.

As an Angeleno, and someone who will be affected by the closure, I think all the dire predictions are going to have the positive effect of keeping everyone off the roads except for those who really can’t avoid it. A lot of people are planning to load up on groceries and to stay home. It could end up being a ghost town.
