Question for TSocash--confused by EN letter

TSocash--

S applied Early Notification (stellar grades, Eagle Scout, other activities, legacy) and we can't figure out if he is deferred to RD, or placed onthe wait list.

The letter he received asks if he wants to be placed on the UR Alternate List. Please help us understand what this means.

Thank you

It pains me to say that your son has received a "Waitlist" letter.

Here's what to do if you receive a Waitlist (aka Alternate List) letter and Rochester is still your # 1 choice...

1) Immediately mail back the "I'm still interested in Rochester" form.

2) Give the Admissions Office a call. We want to hear your concerns and help you through this process.

3) Feel free to share information with us (via mail / email) about what you've been up to since you've applied to Rochester. Perhaps your grades keep going up, perhaps you won an award, etc.

The waitlist pool will remain dormant for awhile. Once we get a better idea about our yield (the # of students who accept our admit offers), we will then know if we will need to dip into the waitlist. This typically happens around the end of April / beginning of May. Hope for the best, but expect the worst. Rochester hasn't been a school in recent years that has relied on the waitlist to complete a freshman class, but anything can happen.

I am happy to answer generic questions about the waitlist here, but anything specific should be discussed between the applicant and an Admissions Counselor. We are available M-F from 8:30-5 at this toll-free number: 1-888-822-2256.

TSocash, I have been following the UR thread for a while, and thank you very much for spending the time to write numerous posts. They are really helpful and I could find almost everything I wanted to know.

S also got a "Waitlist" letter, but I'm still thankful he was given the opportunity to be reconsidered in March. He will mail out the "still interested" form tomorrow.

I'd like to ask how important the interview is. S's interview was cancelled because he thought that he must accidentally delete the interviewer's email. Is it possible he can get another interview? thank you!

PostiveMom,

Does the language in the letter indicate that the application would be reconsidered in March? It was my understanding that most of this Waitlist Review would happen at the beginning of May, after the May 1st deposit date. (At that point, we will know our exact yield and we will know how many, if any, students need to come off the waitlist.)

The only exception to this rule might be for the Dual Degree with Eastman students, whose waitlist decision could hinge on the Eastman School of Music's Admission Decision. These applicants might get another look in March, but everyone else (I believe) has to wait a bit longer.

Tyler

Tyler,
Just a clarification: Any students receiving acceptance off the waitlist will (most likely) be notified after May 1?
Thank you.

Dual Degree with Eastman students may hear sooner (but I'm not 100% on this). Everyone else will probably have to wait until the end of April / early May at the earliest.

We don't expect you to wait for Rochester. Please continue to pursue your other options and make sure that you put down a deposit somewhere so you know that you have a home next fall. If you're still interested in Rochester, let us know, and we'll make our waitlist decisions as soon as possible.

Nobody wants to hear this right now, but remember that transferring into Rochester is always a future possibility.

Tyler, you are right. It says "during April or May".
