Hey Guys,

I know in the end I have to make the decision, but I would like others feedback on how they would approach my question.

A little bit about myself. I went to the Boston Conservatory BFA Musical Theatre Program for 2 years with a GPA of 3.42 and 73 credits earned. My goal in life is to do TV and Film Acting, but the musical theatre training was important to me because now a days there seems to be more movie musicals and musical tv shows. Right now I’m SAG Eligible and based in Miami Florida doing commercials and small principal or extra work in professional films, or larger roles in unpaid/or deferred payment films.

Now I’m contemplating on either transferring into USC (University of Southern California) BA in theatre and minor in Musical Theatre and finish my degree in Los Angeles and get to know the lay of the land, try to get a steady job, make connections and friends, and hopefully after college have some form of living arrangements in California. And start trying out for audition. I’ll be a SAG member in California, I’m eligible right now, but I know when I make the move to Cali I’ll join SAG. But just like Boco, I’ll be in debt and I know trying to work and make a living and trying to get work in LA will be tough.

So heres my second option. My parents had me apply at a local state college’s Associate Degree in Radiology. I have no passion for X-Ray technology, but I know it’ll be easier to get a job and they work on shifts so I could move to California in 3 plus years, 2 years for the program and 1 year of working locally so I have one year working experience since I see that is required for a lot of job interviews for X-Ray Techs. However I have no desire to do this career, I feel as long as I complete the program it’ll be easier to have a job and pay off my debt for boco easier. With this program I’ll have a full ride scholarship cause I had a high school GPA of 4. 34 and a resident.

Wondering what people would advise to do. In the end I want to be an actor on tv and film in Los Angeles, but not sure which path will be better.

Thanks guys.

Before you make any moves, look at the acceptance rate for USC and UCLA in theater- it is EXTREMELY competetive. As a transfer, it is even more difficult to get in; almost impossible. UCLA accepted one transfer student in MT this year; I don’t know if USC took any transfers in theater. It might be a good idea to have some sort of career with which you can make a living while you try to make it in film and TV. LA is a very expensive place to live, and if you are trying to pay off student loans while living here, you will probably be struggling to make it financially. If you are not interested in X-ray tech., is there something else that does interest you more? Just make sure to really think it through before moving here. It is very difficult to make it in the industry here and I would hate to see you invest in moving here without a solid plan for how you will pay your expenses. Is there some reason you did not want to finish your degree at BoCo? If it was financial, USC will not cost much, if anything, less than BoCo. Another option is how about going to a state school in your home state to keep costs down and then moving to LA. I don’t know enough about your situation to be any help, but be sure to investigate your options thoroughly before making any decisions. Good luck!

an X-ray tech is a terrific survival job!!! Lots of opportunities and like you said night work.

18 - 22 is the most difficult age for most actors. That is why you hear of so many celebrities going to college like Jodie Foster, Brooke Shields, Natalie Portman to name a few. I’m not sure what credits from Boco are transferable so you need to look into that closely. State school that has acting for film course might be a good idea but I do not know what kind of degree you would come out with. Good luck to you.

Got into USC as a transfer theatre major. I’m really glad, however I might still do the state thing depending on financial aid. Back up is a state school for business not what I want to do, but it’s free, or go to USC for theatre, what I want to do and it’s where I want to end up, but even with financial aid it’s going to be more than doing the free state program.

Good luck and congratulations on USC! I hope it all works out for you and you are able to attend!

Friends of ours who have professional children say to “get a degree” even though it is tempting not to. And Go Trojans!:)

I would just like to note that as shown by the original poster on this thread, and as I know by my own experience, although it might be very difficult to transfer into USC’s BFA program (you would actually just have to start over again as a freshman I believe), it is most certainly possible to transfer into their BA program if you have strong academic standing at your previous college.

Oh, and congratulations!
