Question on acceptance

During the UArts audition I attended a week or so ago, I was one of 9 people out of 50 musical theatre audition majors that auditioned that day. I got a HUGE impression that they wanted me badly, but I received a rejection letter in the mail. They did not even put me on the wait list. I’m confused as to why it was a full out rejection.

Am I just upset about this, or is there some explanation?

I’m sorry the outcome was so disappointing. There really is no discernible explanation. The audition process at all schools is a subjective one and there is no way to know why one student is accepted and another not. And the fact that you were rejected at UArts does not mean that you will not be successful at another selective well regarded program. At times, it really feels like there is no rhyme or reason why one school accepts a student and another rejects the same student and vice versa. I remember when my daughter was auditioning, a school that seemed very positive about her audition rejected her and another, where the auditors were not only stone faced but also where one was over heard to say "she doesn’t have it, accepted her with a large scholarship. So, try not to take it to heart and certainly don’t allow it to diminish your energy and focus for your other auditions. Best of luck.

Beeje2011 (from another parent’s perspective) if this was to happen, it’s probably best that is happened early on in the audition process for you. My D’s experience is similar to what MichaelNKat described and you really can not gauge your “chances” by the feedback at the audition- quite the contrary it may seem. Keep in mind, there are so many variables in selecting a student for a program and although the panel might really like you, they might not need your “type” or have other reasons (both in and out of your control) for not selecting you. Do not allow this to discourage you in the least. It seems like your audition went well and use this upbeat audition experience to propel you as you audition for other programs… it seems to always fall into place and it will for you! I second the best wishes to you in this crazy process (it will all be over in a few months and you will look back and laugh at it all…promise!)

Beeje2011: My D’s audition for Uarts was the opposite with there only being one guy there, and he was in a bad mood. She got the feeling that it went ok, but didn’t really think she’d get in. There were other auditions she felt so much better about, and one that went really, really well; She got into Uarts, and did not get into that other school (and it was one she really thought was the right one for her). Turns out, Uarts was the best school for her. You will get in several places, and there is the “right” school out there perfect for you. So don’t be discouraged.
