Question on ACT English Section - Need Help With This Problem!!

The so-called “Cammo Dudes” is one favorite tourist attraction; they are men who patrol the Area in unmarked camouflage uniforms and white Jeeps.

(“is” is underlined)

F. NO CHANGE
G. are
H. was
J. were

Shouldn’t it be no change because it is ONE tourist attraction. Even though there is more than one man, it is still one tourist attraction.

The correct answer is G.

I think it has something to do with the fact that later in the sentence, they refer to the cammo dudes as “men” instead of “an attraction”, confirming that they are plural?

but in the sentence with the question, it refers to only one attraction. is this a badly thought-out question? or are there many questions like this on the english section? this is the first time i’ve personally seen a question this confusing on the ACT…

by the way this is a sparknotes test.

^Yes, since the term “Cammo Dudes” is plural, and it is the subject of the sentence, the verb that refers to it must also be plural. Think about some other examples, using more common speech, and the grammatical correctness becomes apparent:

“Deep dish pizzas is one favorite food in the city of Chicago.”

VERSUS

“Deep dish pizzas are one favorite food in the city of Chicago.”

Sure, it might still sound a little bit awkward to say out loud, but it becomes blatant that “is” simply isn’t’ acceptable in that type of sentence.

And I assure you, this is probably one of the more difficult questions you’ll come across on the ACT English section. The key here, as jd mentioned, is the fact that in the second part of the sentence, it is clearly stated that “Cammo Dudes” refers to a group of people. It is a plural term.

later on in the sentence it describes the cammo-dudes saying “they are men…”
they aren’t describing the tourist attraction, and they specify that the dudes are plural, so it must be are.

o ok. thanks everyone.

the answer is g?

yea the correct answer is g
