Hi, We are looking at enrolling S26 for a summer course in a Community College, and I have a question. All the California Community Colleges have the same application, and at the end of the application they give an option for consent.
I am attaching the screenshot, and providing a link to their privacy policy: https://portal.cccmypath.org/uPortal/p/privacy-policy.ctf1/max/render.uP
In a nutshell, I am wondering if S26 does not consent, can he still request the community college to send the transcript to the universities, and get the credit for the courses he will be completing. Is there anything he will not be able to do if he does not consent? I am just wary of sharing SSN with them.
@Gumbymom
Why do they ask about SS number?
@albright7:
A Social Security Number is not required to submit an application. However, if you choose to not provide your Social Security Number (SSN) or Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) or if you do not have one, California Community Colleges are required to inform you of the federal laws for collecting and submitting your information to the IRS, and the penalties that may be levied against you for failing to provide a valid Social Security Number or Taxpayer Identification Number. These regulations include:
-
The Social Security Number of Taxpayer Identification Number is required to claim tax credits for higher education costs known as the American Opportunity Tax Credit in accordance with the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997.
-
Federal regulations require the California Community Colleges to provide specific information to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for the purpose of filing an information return (IRS Form 1098-T āTuition Statementā) for each student in attendance, with a few exceptions. The specific information collected includes the studentās name, address, Social Security Number (SSN) or Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN/iTIN), and enrollment status, as well as the amount of tuition paid or billed, and scholarships received. (26 C.F.R. 1-60505-1 (b)(2)(ii).)

I am providing SSN with my application.
My Q is whether I am going to lose on anything by not providing the consent.
Sorry, I was probably answering @thumper1 ās question but I would contact the CC in question and ask if there are any issues with not giving the consent.

If you click through to the Privacy Policy it states:
Individual choice: Submission of your personal information to this website is voluntary. If you choose not to submit your personal information to this website you will be required to complete paper forms to submit a college admission application, financial aid application and other student services applications.
So in a nutshell, it sounds like if you do not give consent, youāll have to fill out a paper application, probably in person.
We enrolled our S25 last summer (in a CCC) and I donāt recall ever completing this. If I remember correctly there was a special application for high school students. Why would you give your own SSN if it is your childās enrollment? I think I did have to give consent as he was under 16 at the time.
This consent thing was always there for CA community colleges. When I googled, I found old posts with same Q, but did not find answer.
And yes, I am talking about my studentās SSN.
Permissions like this are just one of the many in a life-long line of them, and once your child hits college and is 18 heāll be completing a ton of them on his own.
I understand (and echo) your concern about keeping personal information as protected as possible, but sometimes you just have to surrender to the systems in place for the sake of expediency and try to protect your information on the back end as best you can.
